This is an interesting question because I'm not so sure this is on Garrett and certainly is just not on Garrett.
As much as people say this is a passing league I would disagree. It's a league based on what's best for your personnel. Sure if you have a Mahomes or a Rodgers you're going to be pass happy but what tools does he have ? If you're going to play Andy Reid football you surround your QB with a Kelce, a Hill, a great OL and you happen to be smart enough to draft a generational QB. But most teams don't have that luck or luxury,
Murray is successful because of his ability to run and not pass the same as Lamar. Take away the threat of them running all over you and what do you have. That couldn't have been more evident than Monday night's game. Lamar returns, appears to be headed for a first down, the defense reacts to his run and he hits a WR breaking open because the defenders are watching Lamar run.
Me personally I subscribe to the Parcells philosophy in that you win with a strong running game and defense. Control the LOS and take Mahomes, or Murray or Jackson and limit their touches. Neither Lamar or Murray are going to beat you with consistent quick strikes in the passing game. Mahomes is a different story.
I'd rather have a Derrick Henry pounding the ball for 120 or 130 yards every week and a good D than a team that lives and dies with the pass. Again look at Monday night's game, 9 rushing TDs. The announcers made several references to Mayfield being so much more effective of a passer when rolling out and the RPO than when he's in the pocket. If you contain Lamar does he scare you as a passer ?
Someone once said 3 things can happen when you throw a pass and 2 of them are bad. No one has ever said the same about a running game.
Jones has not shown that he is the kind of QB that can lead a team with his arm. We've seen bad decisions in the Steelers game, the Rams game by him. We've seem engram drop a game sealing pass and have how many missed catches turn into picks. They don't have a dynamic WR like a Tyreek Hill or Davonta Adams which just adds to the woes of the passing game.
As Bama pointed out look what Garrett did in Dallas especially Dak's rookie year. They had a dominant running game first with Zeke that kept Dak in manageable downs yardage wise. They had Witten wh was as sure handed as you could be, you had a great OL plus Dak could run. Dak never scared anyone on his own. If Dak was that great of a QB don't you think Jones would have paid him ?
Garrett has coached against the Giants for many years now. He's familiar with Gallman, Shepard and Engram and to a lesser extent Slayton and Jones. He knows the types of defenses they installed to beat the Giants. You're trying to tell us now that he's forgotten all that info and is creating game plans without the benefit of knowing how he stopped the Giants offense.
Sorry the guy's been around the NFL way too long and had too much success to have lost all that knowledge and now be trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. He had Romo and Dak and was successful with both types of QB's. If he's having a problem with Jones I believe it's more Jones' issue as well as the personnel around him than Garrett's issue.
