2021 SALARY CAP AND TEAM EVALUATION SUMMARY (OverTheCap) (Spotrac) (NFLPA)
10/17/21 CAP Update: According to overthecap.com, the Giants currently have 2.7mm in 2022 CAP space. That is based on a 207mm CAP. In terms of CAP cuts the choices are limited to Bradberry (12mm), Martinez (8.5mm), and Rudolph (5mm) for a total of 25.5mm in savings. The CAP for 2022 is 208.2mm. The Giants will need around 12-15mm to sign the high draft choices they currently have. Solder is in the last year of his contract. As a result of the various extensions he received, there is still 4mm in prorated bonus that is due in 2022.
The good news is that the Giants will be in good CAP shape in 2023. In 2023, Williams, Jackson and Ryan are potential CAP cuts. However all three are potential for extensions to save CAP space in 2022 which would lower their potential as CAP cuts in 2023. Bottom line the Giants will be very limited in 2022 free agency and any improved talent on the team will have to come from the 2022 draft and player development.
5/27/21 CAP Update: The NFLPA and owners have agreed to a 208.2mm 2022 CAP. This is an increase of 6mm from the projected 202mm which doubles the 2022 CAP space from 6mm to 12mm. It provides some wiggle room in what will certainly be a tight CAP year for the Giants. If nothing else, it gives them room to provide Barkley with a multiyear extension. 2021 is his option year and he becomes an UFA in 2022.
5/9/21 Update: The purpose of this update is to summarize how the Giants were able to be aggressive in free agency as well as what was accomplished in the draft. According to overthecap.com the Giants are 5mm under the salary CAP. From a CAP point of view as well as a team evaluation point of view the most significant signings included L. Williams, A. Jackson, and Golladay. A 2021 vs 2022 CAP comparison of individual player contracts tells the story. The total 2021 CAP hit for these three players is 20.2mm (more than paid for by cutting Zeitler and Tate). The total 2022 CAP hit for these three players is 63mm. This is the prime reason that the Giants will be in a very tight CAP situation in 2022 unless the salary CAP is significantly greater than the current projection of 202mm.
For an example Golladay's CAP hit jumps from 4.5mm to 21.2mm. The huge jump was accomplished by guaranteeing 1mm in salary with a 250k per game roster bonus in 2021 and then guaranteeing 10mm of 13mm in second year salary. In addition he was given 12.5mm in roster bonuses that were spread out over the 2nd thru 4th year (3 years) of the contract while being prorated over a 4 year period. In order to prorate the bonus over 4 years the 5th year of the contract is void. In summary, Kevin Abrams the Giants Asst GM utilized the concepts of salary guarantees and voidable years to enable the Giants to be aggressive in free agency in 2021. In addition he left enough CAP space for the draft pool which is approximately 3.8mm. Here is a link to a detailed breakdown of the contract: overthecap.com/player/kenny-golladay/5682/
In reviewing the contracts for the aforementioned players, I noted that the contracts for Williams and Jackson are only three year contracts. Williams will be 29 and Jackson will be 28 when they become free agents again. On one hand the Giants are only committed to them for two years as the final year represents significant CAP savings. On the other hand the players maintain leverage for getting one more huge contract. In essence these three contracts spotlight the importance of the draft. If the Giants can replace all three of the above players through the draft over the next three years, substantial CAP space can be saved which in turn puts the the Giants in a strong position to participate aggressively in free agency to sign players entering free agency for the first time. Hence, getting proven players at a younger age.
The 2021 draft has the potential to strengthen the roster immediately as well as in 2022. The draft capital (additional 1st, 3rd and 4th round picks in 2022) that was accumulated as a result of the trade downs will hopefully be used to significantly improve the roster. On paper free agency solidified the defensive line with the signing of Williams; provided a strong presence (Jackson) opposite Bradberry at cornerback; and has given Jones a true tall #1 wide receiver (Golladay). Meanwhile the first three rounds of the draft increased the speed and depth of the wide receiver corp (Toney); provided a strong pass rusher (Ojulari); and a slot pass defender in Robinson. The remainder of the draft provided depth to the Edge defender and linebacking groups along with improved strength on special teams.
Looking at the roster in its entirety, I see depth and increased strength in every offensive and defensive groups with the exception of the offensive line. There was two big surprises during the draft. Gettleman trading down and not drafting an offensive lineman. Head coach Joe Judge clearly has much more confidence in the offensive line than most fans. Apparently he is willing to rely on Gates at center, Solder at right tackle, Hernandez and Lemieux at the guards and Thomas at left tackle. Competition for right guard is likely to come from Zach Fulton (has played 9 games at center) and Matt Peart at the tackle positions. With Thomas coming into his second year along with the return of Solder, the tackle positions appear to be stronger. This will be Gates' second year at center and significant improvement should be forthcoming. So at least on paper a person can understand why the discrepancy between how most fans see the offensive line versus Judge' view of the group.
In wrapping up this summary, my mind turns to Judge's emphasis on coaches that can teach. I firmly believe that this particular emphasis will have a very positive impact on the actual improvement that all fans are hoping to see in the upcoming season. As the old saying goes, the proof is in the pudding. We shall see.
3/10/21 Update: In the past week the Giants made two significant moves and the official NFL CAP has been reported to be 182.5mm. The Giants placed a franchise tag on L. Williams and released Zeitler. With the release of Zeitler the Giants are now about 10mm under the official 182.5mm CAP. That is no where near the approximate 28mm they will need to cover Williams' franchise tag and the draft reserve. Their existing CAP space is close enough to cover the draft and to cover what would likely be the first year of a multi year agreement with Williams. I am expecting that the Giants will either execute a multi year agreement with Williams or rescind the franchise tag by March 17th when the 2021 CAP becomes effective. In addition I am thinking that the Giants will look to restructure the contracts with Bradberry, Martinez and Solder. Conceptually I can see the Giants gaining about an additional 28mm in CAP space by extending all three contracts. That would put them in decent shape to handle signing Williams and being reasonably active in free agency.
3/3/21 Update: The cutting of Tate and Mayo is a total CAP savings of 10.9mm. The Giants currently have approximately 11mm in CAP space. I am expecting Zeitler to be cut or contract restructured. Reports have indicated that the Giants want to restructure Solder's contract. Combined these two moves would potentially free up an additional between 25 - 30mm in CAP space. That is enough CAP space for the Giants to be active in free agency. End of update
According to overthecap.com, the Giants are starting out 3.4mm over the minimum projected CAP ot 175mm. Various analysts have projected the actual CAP to be 180-195mm. For the purposes of this summary, I will use 187mm and presume that at a 187mm CAP the Giants will will have enough to cover the draft. In this scenario any free agency moves will need a corresponding player cut or existing contract adjustment/renegotiation. Last year Gettleman had indicated that he wanted to carry over 20mm into 2021. That obviously did not happen partially because of the in season contract extension for Logan Ryan. Ryan's CAP number for 2021 will be 7mm. In essence Gettleman used 2020 CAP space to extend Ryan. I consider this a good decision.
The Giants have 7 players with cap hits over $8 million: left tackle Nate Solder ($16.5mm), cornerback James Bradberry (17.3mm) right guard Kevin Zeitler ($14.5mm), linebacker Blake Martinez ($10.2mm), wide receiver Golden Tate ($10.9 mm), RB Saquon Barkley (10.1mm) and WR Sterling Shepard (9mm) . Solder, Bradberry, Martinez, Barkley and Shepard are not going anywhere if for no other reason they would generate large sums of dead money.
That leaves Zeitler and Tate as likely CAP cuts. Cutting Zeitler would generate 12mm in CAP savings while cutting Tate would generate 6.1mm in CAP savings. That would give the Giants 18mm in CAP space to sign their own free agents and any free agents from other teams. Evan Engram is entering the final year of his contract with a CAP hit of 6mm. In addition to having to make a decision on Engram the Giants also have to decide on whether to sign Williams or Tomlinson. From a pure CAP management point of view trading, cutting or extending Engram while signing Tomlinson makes the most sense. This would generate 4-6mm in additional CAP space in addition to adding Tomlinson to the 2021 roster. The big question is whether that makes sense from an overall team performance point of view.
In addition to Engram, Mayo, Toilolo, Peppers, Core and Yiodam, are entering the final year of their contracts. Collectively they represent an approximately 16mm in CAP space. Peppers CAP hit alone is 6.7mm. I think it is safe to estimate that the Giants will gain at least 8mm in additional CAP space from this group of players thru cuts or contract extensions.
Based on the above commentaries, the Giants could have 34mm in CAP space available for free agency. While from a pure CAP management point of view, letting Williams go makes the most sense, from a team performance point of view I believe keeping Williams and Tomlison is preferable. Tomlison can be paid for by cutting or trading Engram. Too many drops and inadequate blocking are the reasons why cutting or trading Engram makes sense. So what would it take to sign William. Based on contracts of the top defensive tackles, the first year CAP hit would be very manageable at around 8mm. The subsequent years' CAP hit would be in the range of 20-22mm. Over the CAP is projecting 95.4mm in CAP space for the Giants in 2022. This projection is based on a 227mm total CAP for 2022. That would be a 32-52mm increase from the 175mm minimum total 2021 CAP space. While my gut says that Williams will end up not being signed by the Giants, it will not be a surprise to me if the Giants do sign him. If they do sign him it means that they will do it in the context of knowing they only have 12 players contracted for the 2023 season. To clarify, any new multi year contracts have to done so in context of the impact they will have on the 2022 and especially the 2023 CAP. Effective CAP management requires a current year plus two years perspective.
TEAM PERFORMANCE SUMMARY
Here is my take on the overall team performance:
1. As inferred in the last paragraph of the CAP summary, 2021 is a pivotable year in terms of team performance through the 2023 season and beyond.
2. I consider the offensive line and wide receiver to be the top priority for the offense and the team at large. The signing of Jonathan Harrison to a one year futures contract worth 2mm indicates to me that Gates is not necessarily set as a starter at center. It certainly makes the cutting of Zeitler a virtual guarantee. I cannot see the Giants spending 2mm in CAP on a veteran center unless they intend to have Gates compete for the left guard position. The futures contract is a tactical CAP move so that Harrison's contract does not count against the CAP until the off season formally commences in March. At that point only 51 players count towards the CAP. Whatever the 2021 CAP ends up being, it takes effect with the beginning of the 2021 off season.
3. With the return of Solder, I think that the Giants are set at the tackle position. I anticipate that Thomas will be left at LT and Solder will be moved to RT with Peart representing depth. That places the focus on the guard position. Free agency and the draft will give us more insight into just how confident the Giants are with Gates, Hernandez, Lemieux, and Harrison to man the interior portion of the offensive line. It is important to keep in mind that Hernandez is entering the final year of his rookie contract. After his rookie season it looked like he would anchor the LG position for a decade or more. He has been a huge disappointment since his rookie season. If he does not win the starting position at LG, I see a strong potential for him not making the 53 man roster. Cutting him would represent a 2.1mm CAP savings which could come in very handy in finalizing the 53 man roster.
4. A significant performance improvement is essential to have a clear picture on whether Daniel Jones is the franchise QB going forward. What the Giants do in free agency and the draft will provide insight into how much confident they have in Jones.
5. The need for a true #1 WR is obvious to anyone following the Giants. If they can not fill that position via free agency then they are likely to use their first round draft to fill it. Filling the #1 WR position will be done in the context of needing an edge rusher, a 3 down inside linebacker and an additional cover CB to complement Bradberry.
6. The challenge facing the coaching staff is evaluating each individual player currently on the roster. A big part of the ongoing roster evaluation is what the coaches feel they can accomplish during the off season and through camp with each player. Collectively, the individual player evaluations will lay a foundation for critical decisions that Gettleman has to make concerning any CAP cuts, free agency and the draft.
7. I remain excited about Joe Judge as the head coach. His ability to keep the confidence of his players during a very rough season is impressive. During the 2020 offseason I indicated that Judge's ability to manage the coaches would be critical to his success. Part of that ability is dealing with large egos. I have been impressed with him not letting problems fester. The multiple decisions that he made associated with the poor offensive line performance reflect well on his awareness that significant problems require his immediate and sometimes his ongoing personal attention.
In conclusion, if the Giants can fulfill all of the goals associated with the offense and defense through free agency, the draft and player development, they could reach playoff competitiveness in 2021. That would certainly put the spotlight on Jones and Barkley. 2021 is a critical year for both of them.
