The thing that is remarkable about Gettlemam is his lack of flexibility. I get it, Gettleman has a hard on for the Alabama WR Smith and is going to take him and does a terrible job disguising it so much so that the Eagles traded up to steal Smith from the Giants.
The trade down was a great move, but Gettleman was clearly fixated on WR and was not flexible enough to pivot to another position even through this draft is loaded with WR talent--you should be able to find a good one in the second or third rounds. He was so fixated on the WR position that he took a guy with character concerns at 20, a risky pick, a huge gamble.
This is more evidence that for all of Gettleman's hog molly talk he has morphed into something else as a GM. His decision making is reminiscent of Jerry Reese's who explicitly stated he preferred drafting offensive weapons over offensive linemen. Gettleman reached for Barkley over the better player in Nelson and now he reaches for a WR at 20 with character concerns.
The bonus being we got an extra 1st round pick next year.
So it’s almost a wash of Toney doesn’t pan out. With the caveat that we could have potentially selected someone who works out and also have that 1st.
What I’m trying to say is it’s not as risky as picking 11th and it not working out and surely without the Bears 1st next year.
I agree with you. In fact, I added this statement to my post:
"I'm thrilled with the trade down, though, and so part of me is very happy. Assuming the Giants stink again, they could have two top 10 picks next year, and will hopefully have a new GM making the decisions. Thus, the Giants should be set up rather well for another attempted rebuild."
