QBs are riskier because of the money/ time investment. A RB can be out after 1 season, a QB will be given 4-6 years
The money doesn't matter very much--rookie contracts are capped and based on draft position. But you're right--a QB takes longer to figure out, whereas you can ditch a RB bust much sooner.
Even though that is true, Eli is on the decline and the Giants are going to have to replace him at some point. And so the Giants will have to take on a QB risk at some point in the near future. You are better off taking on that risk with the second pick of the draft, rather than a later pick in the first round where the bust potential increases. The Giants have a high pick in a QB-rich draft and that is one way to minimize the risk the Giants must take on when it comes to finding Eli's replacement.
Your plan for finding Eli's replacement, actually you haven't stated what that plan is, but if your plan is to find a QB in the 2020 draft, there are a few problems with that. (1) Eli was the worst QB in the division last year and a bottom half QB in the NFL. If Eli continues to perform this way (in 2018), you don't have a plan for the 2019 season except accepting the fact that the Giants will waste another season with a starting QB that can't keep up with better ones. (2) Let's say the Giants finish 8-8 in 2019, they would pick around the 18th spot in the 2020 draft. This is your moment when you plan to take a franchise QB? That QB is going to have some major flaws. The Giants could try to trade up, but that will require multiple first round picks in order to get into the top 5 and take a better prospect.
It is also well known that the 2019 NFL draft contains a terrible QB class. So, you aren't going to find Eli's replacement in 2019, that's why I'm assuming your plan for finding a QB involves the 2020 draft. If your plan is D.Webb, that isn't much of a plan at all. D.Webb was a lousy college QB, a third rate guy, and is basically nothing more than a lottery ticket.
