Sam Williams' turnaround on and off the field wows Ole Miss coordinators
We've all watched as Ole Miss senior defensive end Sam Williams has emerged as a college football superstar over the last 12 games. Always loaded with potential, Williams' talents manifested into an All-America campaign in 2021, as helped lead the Rebels to a 10-2 record, No. 8 national ranking and a berth in the New Year's night Sugar Bowl.
A feared pass rusher, Williams owns a school record 12.5 sacks heading into Saturday night's showdown with 7th-ranked Baylor. Those 12.5 quarterback take downs rank fourth in the country. He stands at 22.5 career sacks as a Rebel, good enough for third all-time in the modern-day Ole Miss record book. His 32.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage in seventh in the annals of Ole Miss history.
"Probably not a guy you could be more proud of," Ole Miss co-defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin said of Williams, "and I know, obviously, that the stats speak for themselves and the type of year he had. And that's all good. It's outstanding. But really the transformation he's made as a person in his life and just being accountable both on and off the field, really buying into the team, I talked about that earlier."

It is well documented that Williams, now the father of a one-year-old son who carries the name Sam Williams Jr., has fought his way out of some difficult circumstances from his childhood. His uptick in performance on the field is only out-done by his growth as a person off the field. Once questioned over his intensity and motor on the field, Williams is now widely considered to be a top prospect for next spring's NFL Draft.
"Talk about a guy that really bought into the team, and it’s such a great example for his teammates to say, 'this guy truly just entrenched himself in the team'", Durkin continued. "What can I do to be a great teammate? And you look at all the individual things that came from that. Ultimately, we all understand, we know you got to do -- you want to do what's best for you and extend your career. That happened because a guy really, you know, just bought into the team concept totally. And so it's been more of a transformation in Sam in his life than just as a football player. And that's what I'm most proud of and most excited about to watch Sam as he continues on through his football career and life."

Chris Partridge, the other co-defensive coordinator on the Rebels' staff, echoes Durkin's sentiments regarding Williams.
"Sam, obviously, it's been awesome," said Partridge. "It's hard not to love him. You know, he's really, really bought into the football team over the last two years and got away from himself and really just put in the work ethic on and off the field to really change his life. It's been pretty special. He had a son along the way, which I think puts a lot of things into perspective. He's really the guy that you're going to root for hard going forward, obviously, in this game and moving forward."
