A few weeks ago I thought the Schoen/Daboll team were in over their heads and maybe it was time to start looking at replacements ... which depressed the hell out of me considering it was looking like another two year turnover ... But, I am happy (not crazy out of my head happy, more like "nice ... now we are building a team" happy) ... I love the Burns trade, The Giants have historically been at their best when the defense leads the team ... Lawrence, Burns, Okereke, Banks ... add a few more pieces and this could be a top 5 D ... I think the OL additions could potentially be underrated very good because these guys are all solid, not one is ever going to be an All Pro, yet add them to Thomas and hopefully a competent OL coach and maybe the OL isn't the problem it has been, still need to see if they can make something out of Neal and build some depth but the OL is definitely looking better (sorry for the history reference but the Super Bowl winning Giants teams OL were built on 4 to 5 non Pro Bowl guys working as one) ... I'm not too upset about Barkley signing with Philly, he was just too often injured to warrant that contract from the Giants ... and, for all of his big play ability, he was not a good pass blocker, didn't make decisive cuts (always looking for the BIG play instead of taking the sure thing), and he dropped far too many passes ... McKinley could be the bigger loss, but a safety should be one of the easier positions to fill ... I'd like to see a battering ram added to the RB stable for short yardage and goal line situations, but I believe 3 or 4 or 5 RB's are better for the overall team than one lead back (especially with a 17 and probable 18 game schedule) ... the building is not done, the team still needs to add to its overall physical talent ... which brings me to the draft ... I would hold on to the 6th pick until draft night, the goal should be to trade back and accumulate as much draft capital as possible (I'd even consider a second trade back if the opportunity presents itself) ... I believe the team could find a stud WR in round 2 or 3, there is some DL & OL players ... what about a QB? this is where Daboll & Kafka earn their reputations, if they can pick up someone late in RD 1 or in RD 2 and develop him then draft him but since we are stuck with DJ for at least one more year (or part of it) continue to build the rest of the team and because of free agency and cap situations and a draft every year there will always be a QB or QB's available ... so much easier to root for your team when you feel better about them
