TRANSACTIONS (Source) Updated 01/12/2021
2020 NEW YORK GIANTS DRAFT CLASS
SALARY CAP BREAKDOWN (OverTheCap) (Spotrac) (NFLPA)
July 29th Update: Solder opts out of 2020 season. The way I read the situation, the Giants are on the hook for an additional 8mm to meet the 35mm in guaranteed dollars. I suspect that there is a better than 50-50 chance that Solder will end up retiring next year. His contract runs thru 2022 which leaves 8mm in prorated signing bonus remaining in terms of CAP hit. According to Spotrac, the Giants currently have 14.7mm in CAP space which includes the savings from Solder opting out of the 2020 season. If Solder should retire next year, depending on the timing of the retirement (before or after June 1st) the Giants would incur 8mm in dead money in 2021 or 4mm in 2021 and 4mm in 2022. Presuming that Solder would wait until after June 1, 2021 to retire, the CAP savings would be 12mm in 2021 and 10mm in 2022.
From a cash point of view, the Giants save about 8mm in 2020. Should Solder retire next year, the total additional cash savings would be approximately 20mm. Even if he chooses not to retire in 2021, I strongly suspect that his contract would be restructured into a 2 or three contract. This is a great example of how some NFL contracts never meet the total contract value. It is also a great example on how important a role the guaranteed dollars play.
April 30th Update: The current 2020 CAP space is approximately 17.2mm. This does not include the approximate 13mm needed to sign their draft picks. Should they sign L. Williams to a long term deal, it would likely generate at least 6mm in 2020 CAP space. Another area for generating additional 2020 CAP space is cutting Solder or reworking his contract. Looking forward to 2021, the amount of CAP space is approximately 52mm. This takes into account the current level of 11mm in dead 2020 dead money that resulted from cutting Ogletree, Jenkins, Ellison, Martin and Lauletta. Due to the number of free agents signed, it is unlikely that the Giants will get any compensatory picks in the 2021 draft.
I think it is safe to say that between free agency and the draft the offensive line, linebacking corp, and secondary have been upgraded along with substantial growth potential for 2021. I am optimistic about the addition of Leon Lewis providing quality depth to the RB corp. In terms of overall weaknesses, I am not that concerned about the need for an edge rusher as much as I am concerned about Engram's inability to stay healthy. My hope is that Judge's emphasis on hiring coaches that are known for their teaching abilities will result in a significant upgrade in overall team performance especially along the offensive line and in the play of the front seven defensively. I expect that Judge's exposure to Belichick's approach to game planning and overall strategies in building and maintaining a winning team will more than compensate for the absence of a particular individual skill or availability of a particular player.
Here are some of my additional thoughts about the overall status of the Giants:
1. In the brief time that Judge has been with the Giants, I think he has had a very positive influence on the organization especially in terms of esprit de corp and in achieving a solid draft based on pro ready players.
2. From a pure talent point of view, an edge rusher, center and outside WR are the positions that could be substantially upgraded. Bringing back Markus Golden could be the answer to the need of an edge rusher. Hopefully a contract can be worked out with him.
3. I am particularly excited about the addition of Leon Lewis. I am hopeful that his presence will facilitate the use of Barkley as a total offensive weapon.
4. I am thinking the upgrade in the secondary will translate to giving the front 7 more time to get to the QB.
5. I expect the Giants to be among the very best when it comes to special teams.
February 26TH Update: Giants cutting Ogletree and Martin increased their 2020 CAP space by approximately 12mm. According to overthecap.com, their total CAP space increases to approximately 74mm. 2021 dead money will increase from 4mm to to about 8.7mm. This increases CAP space for the upcoming free agency period to 47-57mm. As discussed on the fan forum, these cuts do not come as a surprise. End of Update
Here is my take on the Giants CAP situation. According to overthecap.com, the Giants are starting out with $61.9mm in CAP space. Approximately 10mm will be needed for the draft. Gettleman has indicated he wants to carry over 20mm into 2021. That makes a great deal of sense in terms of building a reserve to sign the Giants' own future free agents. In addition at least 5mm will be needed for in season moves.
The Giants only have four players with cap hits over $10 million: left tackle Nate Solder ($19.5mm), right guard Kevin Zeitler ($12.5mm), linebacker Alec Ogletree ($11.75mm) and wide receiver Golden Tate ($10.5 mm) Other candidates for release are tight end Rhett Ellison (7.2mm) and linebacker Kareem Martin (6mm). Solder and Tate are not going anywhere if for no other reason they would generate huge sums of dead money. I doubt Zeitler will be cut since the Giants would have to absorb a 5mm hit in 2021 dead money while saving only 7.5mm in 2020 Ellison and Martin are possible cuts Together they represent a 10mm CAP savings.
Realistically, the Giants have 35-45mm in CAP space for the upcoming free agency period .
I am particularly excited about the staff that head coach Joe Judge has put together. In addition to being a very effective speaker and motivator, I believe that Judge is also a very good listener. There are four former head coaches on the staff. Garrett and Kitchens at the NFL level. Dooley and Bielema at the university level. Lots of heads to bounce ideas and situations off of. My take is that to a great degree it will be Judge's ability to manage the coaches that will dictate the amount of success he achieves. Part of that ability will be dealing with large egos. I believe that Judge's excellent communications skills with a particular emphasis on his ability to listen will enable Judge to get the most out of the coaching staff that he has put together.
The most immediate challenge facing the coaching staff is evaluating each individual player currently on the roster. Collectively, the individual player evaluations will lay a foundation for critical decisions that Gettleman has to make concerning any CAP cuts, free agency and the draft. Here are what I think are the key decisions that has to come from the individual player evaluations:
The following are their own free agents: DI Leonard Williams, LB David Mayo, WR Cody Latimer, T Mike Remmers, S Michael Thomas, EDGE Markus Golden. Given the publicized 15mm contract Wiilliams is seeking, it will be interesting to see if Williams is pursued by the Giants . I expect that all of their other free agents will be pursued by the Giants. If they do not pursue a particular player, it will be because of the player evaluation provided by the coaching staff.
A big part of the ongoing roster evaluation is what the coaches feel they can accomplish during the off season and through camp with each player. In terms of projecting a starting roster for the new season, decisions have to be made on the following positions:
1. Who has to be replaced as starters on the offensive line. While much of the conversation has been centered on the tackles, I think that upgrading the center is at least as important as upgrading RT and determining if Solder should be kept at LT. I think an upgrade at center would have a beneficial impact on the performance of both guards.
2. Is Barkley's backup already on the roster? There is no doubt in my mind that the RB corp can be improved through free agency and/or the draft.
3. Can Engram stay healthy? The depth at TE is a key aspect of the ongoing evaluation of players on the current roster.
4. Currently there are 12 receivers on the roster. Tate underperformed. Shepard is a solid to very good slot type receiver. Slayton clearly has tremendous upside with the kind of speed needed at WR. So the obvious question becomes, is there another WR hidden on the roster. If not, then getting another true WR type player is a priority.
5. As we all know, the defense is a mess. There is definite talent along the defensive line. There are 13 linebackers on the roster. I believe that determining what talent they have and how to use that talent is a top priority for Judge. The following quote from his introductory press conference gives me reason to be optimistic that he will figure it out. "What I learned from Coach Belichick was real simple — be flexible within your personnel. Don’t try to shove round pegs into square holes. Figure out what you have. Let them play to their strengths."
6. There are 8 cornerbacks and 8 defensive backs on the roster. I believe that Baker and Peppers will be two of the four starting secondary defenders. Beyond that I simply do not know what the Giants have. I strongly suspect that a significant amount of the shortcomings in the secondary observed during the past season can be attributed to poor play calling and poor strategic planning by the defensive coordinator. In addition, I believe that lack of clear communications between the defensive coaches and the players as well as poor on field communications played a huge role in the inconsistent and often chaotic performance by the defense.
7. It is very likely that for the first time in 13 seasons the Giants will be looking for a new long snapper. Replacing Zak DeOssie will be a challenge. Rosas struggled this past season. I think he will be fine. There certainly will be competition in camp. There are two punters on the roster. I will be very surprised if Dixon does not continue to be the Giants punter. I do not see coming up with kick and punt returners as a particular challenge. It would not be a surprise to me if via the draft or free agency they come up with a specialist for both roles.
