This question has made me wonder many times. When it comes to picking a backup QB for a team. Is the answer getting a vet or drafting a late round QB with upside? I can see the upside and downside to both approaches. To me it seems there is a slight advantage getting one in the draft. There are a few career backup QBs in the league and some of them have made a really good living doing it too. Look no further than Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, Trevor Siemian to name a few. But with backups...you get what you see. And with backups the better they are the more expensive they tend to be and eat at the CAP, therefore making less money available to sign free agents and keep players already on the team. Backups tend to be older, which brings history of injuries and older legs. Teams around the league also know all patterns and idiosyncrasies of these men...basically no surprises here. The downside to getting a backup in the draft is you don't know what your getting, but if you get a fringe prospect like Bailey Zappe, Brock Purdy or Dorian Thompson-Robinson. You get a guy cheap for 5 years, someone you can teach, and being young...I would imagine someone that can run. Gleenon is a backup that was fun right?
There are tons up bad backup stories, but there are a few good ones too.
Drew Bledsoe gets hurt...in comes backup Brady
Tony Romo gets hurt...in comes Prescott
Trent Green Gets hurt ...here comes Warner
Brett Farve is a backup in Atlanta and has to go in for Cris Miller and SUCKs...goes to Green bay as a backup to Don Majkowski....he gets a chance and...
Matt Flynn...backup for Green bay and signs a deal to be starter for Seattle...but lost the starter job to Russell Wilson who was drafted to be a backup
All these guys were drafted late...and slated to most likely be backups in the NFL.
Look at this list...Do you see any possible late gems that could be better than guys like Glennon?
