The following are what Bill Polian had to say on NFL Live.
1. When he was GM the draft board was locked on the Sunday before the draft.
2. On Tuesday many different draft scenarios for each round were acted out. This is done as if they are already on the clock. The 3rd day ot the draft is the most demanding because the draft board becomes very fluid and trades typically have to be done within the five minutes that they were on the clock.
3. Also on Tuesday all the communications to and from the draft location and checked and double checked. This continues right up to the draft.
4. All the Ts are crossed and Is dotted on every single player with a particular focus on any medical changes.
5. The only thing that can change the board after Sunday is a medical update.
6. When communicating with other teams about potential trades, they used the actual pick number (i.e. 77th pick) not the round and pick number.
7. Comments/rumors during the week of the draft should not be given much credibility.
I found the comment about conducting many draft scenarios prior to the draft as an indirect condemnation of some of the Giants past drafts. There was one particular situation that stood out in my mind. The Giants drafted DE Cedric Jones with the #5 pick knowing he was blind in one eye. Beyond the very questionable decision to draft a player with compromised vision with such a high pick, there were reports that the Giants were caught by surprise that the players the wanted went in picks 1-4. How do you not have 5 players identified when you have the 5th pick. How is the fifth player one that has compromised vision. Strange really strange.
