We are going to see a different offense this year. Much different. I always like the 2 TE set or 12 personnel formation. Shurmur philosophy if you watched a lot of Vikings games is an ACE with TEs and backs Also remember Eli struggles were with the deep ball. You won’t see to many of those either Eli strengths as a QB fits Shurmur like a glove and Allows Shurmur to give Eli several plays to audible at the line of scrimmage based on the formation he is looking at
Remember Shurmur offense isn’t a wide open gun slinger offense. It’s balanced. A lot of big personnel in twin TE sets or 12 personnel sometimes even 3 TEs sets. His offense revolves around running the ball and 5 step drops for a deeper pocket. He also loves his backs in the passing game You will see especially with Engram and Manning a ton of 12 personnel checking into 11 or 11 checking into 12. You will also see Barkley checking in as a back and shifting to WR trying to get him 1 on 1 vs linebackers.
If you guys remember Reid as Eagles coach. His backs and TEs killed is. Very creative. And if the numbers were there in the box he has the blockers to run. The thing we are forgetting is in today’s NFL and in Shurmur offense they are trying to get the defense into a base 4-3 or base 3-4. He wants his RBs and TEs lines up against your linebackers Football is situational game and like chess a game of mismatches The biggest mismatch in today’s game isn’t WR on CB it’s TE vs linebacker or RB vs linebacker. Engram and Barkley fit that scheme. Especially if Engram gets a little better as a blocker Shurmur is also old school and uses FB. So I would expect 3 TEs and a FB on the 53 and only 5 WRs
Why Shula fits is Shula is a run heavy coordinater and believes in running the ball between the tackles with aggressive lineman that don’t wait but look for work. What I mean by that is they engage there lineman immediately they don’t wait for the rush. They go get it. Same as run blocking There blockers look to engage not wait to block The reason why they were so high on Barkley is he is brilliant in space. With an engaged blockers he can hit the hole fast and get himself to the second level where he is at his best
Look for a very physical offense this year
