This is a complicated defense. It really is. It maybe to complex. Hopefully these guys can learn it. From what I can tell it’s a 3-4 but he uses multiple looks and guys in different rolls Sometimes he has 1 DE down lime and 2 DTs with 3 linebackers and 3 safeties. Sometimes he has 3 DTs 4 Linebackers and 2 safeties. I have even seen 2DTs and 3 linebackers and 3 safeties and 3 Corners. So it’s difficult to really grasp what to call it. I Guess it’s still a 3-4 because you have 1 guy almost always in a 0 point stance and 2 in a 2 point stance That’s typically where your 3 down lineman line up in a 3-4. The other constant is MLB. There is always one in the formation. I think that’s why Gettleman made the trade for Ogletree. He needs a good MLB to get them lined up
It’s a confusing Defense to fallow. Getchner does bring pressure from everywhere. It can be from 2 linebackers any of them or the saftey and a linebacker. He even brings the corners in to blitz. He usually brings 5 at a minimum. I think that’s why Carter was brought in. He will be used as a rusher most of the time along with Vernon But both those guys will be asked to cover. He brings it from the ILB and safety a lot as well.
The thing I noticed was when they really played well the 3 down lineman really did a good job on 4 of the Oline blockers and the tackle that was getting swallowed up or occupied that’s usua where the pressure cane from. It forced RBs and TEs to block If that’s the Case we should see Vernon getting blocked by TEs and Backs often. That’s what we want. The Hill draft pick makes sense if you watch some of the Cardinals games. If Hill can play in that 2 point stance in one on one situations with pressure from the 2 gap it will give most QBs a shadow pocket to climb. And that’s a good thing. The Teams the Cardinals struggled a bit against were Seattle because Wilson usually moved out of the pocket. In a 3-4 the pocket is a little different. It’s usually a U shape where in a 3-4 the locked is open one side or the other and typically doesn’t form that pretty U Especially when you really don’t know where that 4 and 5th rusher are coming from.
He crowded the line of scrimmage often showing 8 people all there. 3 drop back and get into passing lanes. It did appear to put a lot of pressure on the DBs. Especially if they don’t get home. Usually from what I saw the ball came out fast and Arizona DBs were fast to close and tackled very well. If that’s the case Thomas (our safety last year ) is out. That kid can’t tackle a stationary dummy Maybe that’s why Gettleman brought in so many DBs to bring as much competition as possible
My only hope is these guys are smart enough to learn this Defense. It does look complex
