I was just thinking how crazy this years draft played out. I usually read mock drafts and look at big boards. I also did a few here with people that participated. Every year no one is right. Actually not even close
I mocked Rosen to the Giants and had R. penny gong to the Giants round 2 with jewel going to the Giants round 3 Most mocks had Guice going round 1 to the Lions and some mocks had Penny going round 3 It amazes me how differently teams look at players and how they stack up
So I studied the draft and a few drafts year or 2 ago. This is what I noticed
Teams don’t seem to draft players off of what they see now but what they vision the player will become. This year we saw OT Miller go early The Raiders saw a future LT I mock a player for the team now The Tackle from the Irish went early as well. LT seems to be harder and harder to find One one player at a high demand position is picked there seems to be a run on them. This years draft had 1 true pass rusher and a few potential pass rushers. The saints traded the farm to get a guy that probably would of been there. Or maybe not. Makes the Larenzo Carter pick in round 3 seem like a steel
It looks like teams are drafting different It was easier to mock drafts 5 years ago. Best player regardless of need usually got picked. Now it seems trans pick on potential not true grade Or are the analysts that far off there game. Rosen to the Cardinals I feel got the best value where they picked him. I also think RB has skyrocketed in teams eyes. Especially true 3 down RBs. Guys like Barkley Penny Michele can do it all And they all went round 1. A true 3 down running back can really open up your playbook on every down and distance call Can you imagine the Giants on a 3rd and 14 with Jacobs in the backfield? Are players really focusing on him On 3rd and one with Jacobs in the line up. It’s probably a run up the middle right. So enters any one of those 3 backs above. They are back there 1st 2nd and 3rd down regardless of distance. Short yardage sure. Outside run sure. Trap pull draw sweep no problem. How about a screen or a swing route. Maybe a wheel route. Or just send him upnthe middke on playaction and send him across the linebackers face How much value does that really have ?? I’m thinking a lot When the Giants removed Jennings and Vereen came in. It was a few things teams had to look for. Screen swing draw or play action The offense was literally crippled by big backs for power small backs for passing situations
Things that have remained the same
Pass rushers demand is high and hard to find
LT demand high
CB that can do it all
And now 3 down RBs
Positions that have changed
QB. Yes QB. It seems that position has changed. Instead of an average QB trumps all positions, teams and coaches feel they need a QB with a skill set to fit there offense and what they want to do
Linebackers seem to be hybrids now. They are getting smaller and faster almost like a safety. Years ago LBs were 6’2” y’all 250 pounds Now it’s more common to see them 6’2” tall 230 I remember SS drafted that we’re thst size
TEs are becoming WRs
WRs are becoming TEs. Teams look for WRs that are 6’3” tall 225 pounds where TEs are 6,4” tall 235 pounds. Not much of a difference and niether can block
So how do teams put together there boards and why are analysts so far off now? What we read and fallow vs what really happens are worlds apart
