The Giants have 3 big players coming up on contracts. Actually 2 but the 3rd is right there. Breaking down there games and where they may stand with money coming there way
Daniel Jones. The most political player in a Giant jersey. Very careless with the ball until Daboll came to town. Is he the Giants future or is he a bridge player until the future QB is found. This player has the fan base divided. Half love him and he is their guy. The other half don’t like him and want to go in a different direction.
There is no doubt Jones is playing his best football as a pro. Kafka/Daboll have been doing a good job minimizing the thinking and allowing Jones to make easy decisions on his first read, check down and run. The run game also has been hitting another gear helps the QB tremendously. My concerns are Jones in 9 games has only thrown the ball 237 time averaging 177 yards per game with only 8 TDs. He is on pace for 3000 yards passing and 16 TDs in 17 games. We don’t really no why this passing attack is so vanilla. Some think it’s because of lack of receivers. Others think it’s micromanaging Jones not allowing him to be the turnover machine that he is known to be. I think it’s both. I do believe there needs to be an upgrade at the receiver position and I also think Jones has put enough sloppy play on tap that Daboll and Kafka want to simplify the passing game as much as possible to stay on time in the downs and distance category. I believe the conversation is to run the ball. Minimal penalties, stay in that 3rd and manageable category and play good defense. We can debate and argue until the cows come home on this. I truly feel it’s both. I believe Jones is a guy they can build around but has a lower ceiling then they would like. I do believe Jones is back next year on a team friendly deal that Jones and the Giants can live with for 2 years that make him easily tradable if needed. If a QB presents itself to the Giants in the draft they will take him. Develop him and when they feel the time is right. Trade Jones. If no Qb does. They got Jones. If it’s doable?!?!
Barkley is a guy I do believe the Giants want to keep. BUT the problem is Barkley is the best back in football right now and I’m sure he wants to be paid like one. The problem is Barkley has already had major injuries and the position itself has a short shelf life and Barkley is likely going to get bay up again in the future. He is blocking much better. He is playing with better leverage and getting more of those tough 2-3 yards per run that are critical in staying on schedule. The burst is still there if needed. I would love for him to stay but in my opinion it needs to be in that 8-10 million range max. So a 3 year 30 million contract is the sweet spot. I doubt Barkley will take that contract. My guess is he will be looking for 4 year’s minimum at about 11-13 million 4 year 52 million contract. Backs are easily replaced in the draft. This league is littered with day 3 and undrafted backs that are very successful.
Lawrence they have time with. But I think they should extend him this year to give a little more cap space. Lawrence is playing his best football. I think he was out of position last 3 years playing more like an End than a tackle inside. Lawrence is lining up in the 2 and 3 technique under Wink and with Graham he was in the 4 technique a lot. He is a true DT not a 3-4 End. With Thibs here. The Giants are still in a 3 - 4 but they’re lining up very similar to a 4-3. Williams and Lawrence are playing in a more traditional DT gap assignment and Thibs and Ward are playing in a more 5 technique than further outside. Plus Wink is a much better coach than Graham . I think Lawrence is going to be worth about He will be in that 12-14 million a year range. Maybe more. So they may wait on him. But if he continues to get better. They have a big contract coming. I do believe Williams will be in his last year of his extension next year as well. If they only keep 1 of them. DT is going to be a big need soon!!
Ok. So don’t destroy me guys. Here is what I think happens
Daniel Jones gets a 3 year extension. Yes 3. But it will only be 39 million with the ability to earn up to 60 million. So his cap hit will only be 13 million a year pending bonus money and how that is spread out. Incentives hit the cap at the end of the season so it allows the Giants to make moves before the league new year if he plays and earns big incentives. It also make his contract tradable if they find a new guy.
Barkley I think walks. With his injury history and the money he probably wants. Barkley may not return. You never no. He may give the Giants a break if he wants to be here more then he wants a few extra million. But if the money is what drives him. Barkley will get paid by someone.
Lawrence I would love to see extended but I think they wait. Lawrence gets his payday in 2023 and Williams will be a free agent. I see Sexy Dexty getting a 4 year 72 million deal giving him about 18 million a year.
