My guess is that he is currently worth between $25 million-$30 million per year. If the Giants win one or even multiple playoff games that could possibly skyrocket to $35M to $40M per year. At some point you have to pay your starting quarterback. I think everybody is forgetting how much money we paid Eli every year for so long. This is why you have to be able to draft young talent and keep churning that system along because you’re not going to be able to pay everybody. And this is why I recommended letting Barkley go and it’s also why I brought up the possibility of letting Leonard Williams go.
By the way, I do not blame Schoen one single bit for not picking up the fifth year option because while it’s hard to remember now with all of the success that’s been going on, Jones was not good last year. Coming into this season he was a bottom 10 quarterback in the NFL. So I do not blame Schoen for not extending Jones or picking up the fifth year option. Jones has to earn his next contract and he has done that.
And sorry to include Barkley in this because this was just supposed to be about Daniel Jones, but reality is their futures with this team are tied together by how much Jones gets paid. If Jones plays well, wins a playoff game and ends up getting 30M or 35M a year, kiss Barkley goodbye. They can’t afford to pay Barkley 12 million a year if they’re giving Jones 35 million a year. They just can’t. I know he’s a great kid and everybody loves him but honestly he hasn’t been special since about the sixth or seventh game of the season. He’s been a very average player the whole second half of the season and you don’t give that guy 12 million a year. They’re going to have to let him walk if he wants 12M, and they’re going to have to draft a running back and use a running back by committee approach with Breida and Brightwell.
