Assuming no deal will not be made. What franchise tag should be used? If any?
I say if any for a reason. Tyrod Taylor was signed for two years for a reason. I remember when he was first signed some here thought the price for Taylor was too high, but after Glennon...Some thought Taylor was a breath of fresh air. I was thinking...Taylor was brought here just in case Jones had a horrible year and Taylor would have to take over somewhere in 2022 and be the starter in 2023 to groom our newly drafted QB.
It happens that Jones had a pretty good season. As a fan of Jones, I was extremely happy and felt that he deserved some sort of contract and that the Giants finally had adults running the ship and with our new GM, HC and Wink and Kafka...we hit the lottery. And I still do. Things are looking up. What I never expected was what I have been hearing coming out of Jones' camp...if true. There has to be some truth I would imagine because if not ........why isnt there a deal in place?
Is it possible that Schoen is thinking about going with the " Taylor Option" ? Meaning theymove on stick with Taylor just as though Jones was a bust and build like so?
The problem with this new scenario is the fact that the Giants record moved us out of position to get one of the top QBs in the draft. But nothing can be done about that.
QBs that should be there when we pick are (in order I think will be picked)
Tanner McKee
Hendon Hooker
Stetson Bennett
Aidan O'Connell
Clayton Tune
The other option is draft no QB and just build our freaking team and draft every postion of need and wait until next year to draft a QB. We could add a Baker Mayfield or Mitch Trubisky cheap and let Taylor and the other battle it out for the #1 and # 2 spot.
For me. The problem with the Non-Exclusive tag (that's the one I would pick if I had to tag Jones) is the fact that if no other teams get Jones then we keep Jones for another season. Why is that a problem? Well if his numbers are the same or maybe slightly up...then I could see a Lamar Jackson problem. Perhaps 45 million a year turns out to be an asking price of 55 million a year....and Bam we are back if the same boat, but worse.
I kinda feel like we should move on. Our team is extremely young, and we can build it up to be a power house and right now build it with another EDGE, Center TWO ILB, CB, WR, TE, RB roll with Taylor and get our guy in 2024 draft.
QUESTION: what if we offer Jones a 5-year deal and he declines? Does that mean we get a draft comp?
