There are fewer of these than you would think, reminding us of just how difficult it can be to find franchise QBs.
The two best back-to-back QB duos are pretty obvious:
Montana to Young, HOF QBs, won Super Bowls
Favre to Rodgers, HOF QBs, won Super Bowls
Two questions: am I overlooking or forgetting another great back-to-back QB duo? If not, what would the next best one after Montana-Young and Favre-Rodgers be? A few came to mind:
(1) Peyton Manning to Luck. This had the potential to be special; however, Luck's career was ultimately a disappointment.
(2) Rivers to Herbert. This has the potential to be excellent; Rivers is probably a HOF QB, although he never won a Super Bowl. Herbert has been very impressive.
(3) Eli to Jones: Eli will eventually make the HOF and won two Super Bowls; Jones is a franchise QB, but will he win a Super Bowl and what exactly is his ceiling?
----In short, the Rivers-Herbert and Eli-Jones duos are still to be determined; the careers of Herbert and Jones have a long way to go.----
(4) Stabler to Plunkett. This one is interesting in that Stabler is a HOF QB and won a Super Bowl; Plunkett isn't in the HOF but helped lead the Raiders to two Super Bowl wins.
Am I overlooking any other great back-to-back QB duos? I kept thinking of the Steelers, but there is really no one right after Bradshaw and no special QB prior to Roethlisberger. I guess Roethlisberger-Pickett could be special, but will Pickett be any good?
How about Roger Staubach to Danny White? Obviously, Staubach was legendary, but White never won a Super Bowl and wasn't a HOF QB.
Romo to Prescott? Romo had his moments, but he isn't a HOF QB, never won a Super Bowl, and Prescott seems to be trending in the wrong direction.
