The following is a link to a very nice breakdown of the total organization. theorg.com/org/new-york-giants
Schoen has a total of 44 people under him not counting the players. Four report directly to him including Chris Mara, Brandon Brown, Brian Daboll and Kevin Abrams. Chris Mara heads up the entire scouting department with three people reporting directly to him. Brandon Brown has no one reporting directly to him. I interpret this to mean that he works in lockstep with Schoen in managing the entire football operations. Brian Daboll has 8 people reporting directly to him. Kevin Abrams has 5 people reporting to him. Here is what I found interesting:
1. Chris Mara is directly responsible for the entire scouting department. In the past he had no direct responsibility for the scouting department. We was listed as part of the ownership organization. I strongly suspect that it was Schoen's idea that Chris have direct responsibility for the scouting department. I believe that as part of the interviewing process, Chris Mara and Schoen had extensive conversations about their personnel evaluation process. My gut tells me that those conversations served as the foundation for not only the draft but more importantly the make up of the practice squad and acquisition of players during the season.
2. I strongly suspect that Schoen and Brandon Brown run the organization as a true partnership. I believe that they have a great deal of management expertise in common. More importantly they very likely have strong management strengths in some different areas. It is in those areas that Brandon likely takes the lead thus freeing up Schoen to concentrate on areas of his particular strength.
3. I was surprised to find that Daboll has 8 people reporting directly to him. The offensive, defensive and special teams coordinators are well known to the public. What surprised me the most was to find that the RB coach, assistant OL coach, and the assistant offensive special teams coach also report directly to him. After giving it some thought I realized that this is how Daboll and Kafka decided to truly share the management of the offense.
4. I am particularly impressed with the management teams that top management has put together. There are 3 teams including a leadership team consisting of 11 people, an executive team consisting of 6 people and board of directors team consisting of Jonathan Tisch and Steve Tisch.
5. I was particularly curious about Kevin Abrams responsibilities. I was thinking that Abrams would continue to be the assistant GM as he had been under all GMs dating back to the early 2000s. From what I can deduce Abrams oversees analystics reporting and research, equipment management, field operations and security.
