Gettleman had one heck of an offseason starting with building who I believe is one heck of a coaching staff.
Good trade in MLB Ogletree stabilizing the defense. But that’s not who I’m talking about
Great free agent signing in Nate Solder. Again not who I’m talking about
Giving Jerry and Geco some competition by bringing in Ohmame. Still not who I’m talking about
How about the Big Mauling G from UTEP. Nope
Barkley the best and most dynamic player in the draft maybe in 20 years. Nope
All of the above guys will be a big part of flipping this team around But one guy I believe will bring great value from when picked to money paid to production on the field and helping put wins in the W column. That guy is BJ Hill This pick maybe what pits the Giants draft and offseason over the top. This guy is for real He is very stout against the run. Maybe he can play on there side of the line of scrimmage. He will get very few if never doubled because of Snacks freeing up he burst and strength and quickness to get to the RB and shut down the run. He can also provide very fast first step and good hands to shed blocks getting pressure up the middle. Middle pressure is the most important to make the 3-4 pass rush work. The 3-4 Defense is designed to put speed and more athletic players on the field putting pressure on the edges vs the run and better coverage between the numbers The pass rush is harder to identify and more difficult to block only if your 3 Defensive lineman are consuming 4 offensive lineman and still generating pressure up the middle. If Tomlinson Snacks and Hill can do that guys like Carter Martin and Ogletree should be able to move unblocked vs the run and get home faster vs the pass. We all know Snacks is going to get doubled. If Tomlinson and my man Hill can get one on ones they should be able to get pressure right up the middle or just as effectively giving the QB a shallow pocked to step into. We all know how effective that is by watching Eli trying to step into the locker since 2012 The QB basic fundamentals is the keep his feet moving. Holding the ball high and tight and when ready stepping into his throw. If he can’t step into his throw his balls are going to be all over the place depending on pure arm strength. Accuracy drops significantly. A successful 3-4 needs the middle pressure forcing QBs out of the pocket to athletic linebackers to clean up With today’s NFL and the QBs in the league now they can move. Guys like Prescott Wentz and Alex Smith all in our Division are athletic guys Not to mention Rodgers Stanford Watson Wilson Mariota and company as well. The 3-4 puts better athletic players on the field to defend the mobile QB. I would rather see a linebacker running after Watson out of the pocket then a DE.
So my man BJ Hill could be a huge asset because he provides all of the skills needed as a 3-4 DE.
