2023 is a 4 Game season for the NY Giants.
This is going to be a strange season for the NY Giants and their rabid fans. Uncomfortable negotiations with Daniel Jones has somewhat split the fan base. If we were to take a big picture view, after this season is over really only 4 games matter.-
The two games against Dallas and the two games against Philly are the only games Jones will be truly scrutinizied and progress demanded.
The losing has gone on so long against the two direct competitors in our division it did not take John Mara long to realize the goal this season was simple-- get some wins against those teams.
It is impossible to get a feel for the team watching pre season games. My overall impression is we are slightly worse than last year. Again how could I know without Danny chucking the ball, I don't. The Defense seems slightly off, I really liked the play I saw from Coughlin at LB this pre season but that position is still trouble spot. Love Handy and what he brings but really... we still don't have a All Star LB!
The Schoen shine has dimmed considerably. We have no idea what restrictions are in place but I was not terribly impressed with the draft, it was ok... and the guys we have picked up I think are great ideas but the feeling is of putting team together a team with the contract always being first in priority-- so having years left on an old contract seems far more important to Schoen that what you can put on the field. I do not think that is a healthy way to team build.
When the strong arm tactics with Barkley went down I of course flipped out but many of my contacts with NFL pedigree also agreed the tone was off.
There seemed some re writing of history going on as if we all didn't see the last season and know exactly why we got to where we got. How that all plays out now will be interesting to watch. Will Barkley give us his all-? I wonder, his mind may be on where he goes from here.
One thing I have learned over many years of doing this is do not believe what you are being told in pre season. I always fall for this, I buy into these camp stories who are then cut. I buy into who is looking so much better than last year. The best player in camp was Daniel Jones. Great. What does that tell us. Absolutely nothing. Danny worked on arm strength apparently Great. He was near dead last in every deep category for a thrower and splash plays I think he was last-- Will some strength conditioning really be the difference against the Eagles and Dallas?
It's Danny's mind we have to strengthen. I'm not saying he's afraid to face these two teams, but certainly Dallas and Philly do not respect Danny and do not respect us as a football team. It's more obvious in Philly where they outright say it-- they laugh at Jones -- but I detect the same attitude lurking in the Cowboy players.
The Cowboys enter this game better than last season. They still have Dak throwing the ball and they lost their all pro Tight End but they bring a good offensive line and Tony Pollard now the No 1 back. Behind Pollard is Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn and then my favorite long shot in last years draft UDFA-- Hunter Luepke.
Missing Leupke was a massive dumb dumb move by Schoen. I gave him all the info!!! I really laid it on thick can you believe the gaul in not drafting this young man at all, even Round 7!!!! It's just the ultimate in stupidity, wait till you see what this kid can do on the field. I hope to god he doesn't see a snap against us.
Leupke exploded in the final Dallas preseason game, playing as an H-back.
One big change for the Cowboys that could benefit us is they let young OC Kellen Moore go. McCarthy will be calling he plays. I called around and got surprisingly good feedback for this move.. I seem to remember McCarthy screwing up clock situations and calling dumb plays in the past but for the most part I'm getting back- their offense should bit better with McCarthy at the helm. And certainly the retention of Leupke- has McCarthy's fingerprints all over it.
I think the good thing for the Giants in this game is our strength should be our Defense and our secondary and the Cowboys receivers are talented but not that much better than ours if at all. The big off season pick up was Brandon Cooks. He of six 1,000 yard seasons. Michael Gallup is prepared to take a bigger toll with his ACL injury behind him CeeDee Lamb is the superstar but this unit does not scare me at all.
Dallas' D against our offense is where the action is and where the eyes will be. Can Danny overcome years of futility and finally get a win against Dallas. That is step one in our 4 game season. Step one in the judgment process and maturation process and justification of payroll.
The Giants for their part added veteran TE Darren Waller, LB Bobby Okereke and and receivers Parris Campbell and Cole Beasley.
THE WALLER ADVANTAGE.
I AM SO FRUSTRATED I HAVE NOT SEEN ONE SNAP OF WALLER!!!! Did he play in the pre season at all? Rumors of him having a great camp has me so excited- but where is the proof? Sunday Night finally we will see this man and understand what a huge difference this guy can have on our offense. It is our number one improvement and it has to show.
As we begin our journey this year I think I speak for most Giant fans when I say-- ENOUGH WITH THE SOFT SELL JOE!
Christ this GM won't go out on a limb at all: he won't say what he expects, how he will judge success, if we should make the playoffs--none of that. Which is Ok if you say nothing cleverly but Joe stumbles and just says " we'll see. " I don't like that. That's the words of man who has alot of 1 year contracts on his team and plans to turn the faces over again next year. The real rebuilding that us Giant fans have been expecting is not happening.
We simply got a damn good HC. Daboll is the man who will have to step up- deliver a stem-winding speech- jack Danny up against the lockers and scream in his face-- NOW BOY THAT's WHAT A QB SHOULD PLAY LIKE!! Beat Dallas!!! Daboll is the only hope we have of guaranteeing success this year, not wishing for it, waiting for it and we'll see. That's weak. You have been given the money and how you deployed it is why we are where we are. We better be in a better place.
There is no reason to go over the QB contract situation, what is done is done. Now we have expectations. And those expectations are pretty simple---
BEAT DALLAS BEAT The EAGLES. It's ridiculously obvious what our goal is this year, everything else good will spin off our goal being achieved. Nothing good will happen if we don't get wins against these two rival Division teams.
"Each day, we're going to try to get better," Schoen responded when asked his expectations in the wake of the team accomplishments in 2022.
Actually you have to be better.
"The thing is progress. We're going to focus on our process. I think if we do what we did last year in terms of practicing the right way, coming in and being pros…again, we'll see what happens, I'm not going to say we're going to do X, Y and Z, but I think if we focus on our process, we'll see results."
What are results? Wins. Wins against Dallas and the Eagles. "Process", "progress" these are front office- terms that don't carry weight. What happens when you get punched in the face?
Schoen doubled, tripled, and quadrupled down on his cautious comments.
For example, Schoen has not been shy in conceding that the Giants were 1-5-1 against NFC East teams last season. The lone victory was against fourth-place Washington, and the season ended with a 31-point loss in Philadelphia, their third in seven weeks to the Eagles.
Has that gap closed?
"We haven't played a game yet," Schoen said. "So, we'll see.
Let me answer that one-- YES THE TALENT GAP HAS NARROWED. We need now to see a WIN Game 1. Is Game 1 a must win? It's close. You have a great chance to jump on Dallas and teach them to respect Danny. You have new weapons to work with and a rabid fan base, you are home. As fans we should expect much more from the offense. Just a few longer throws down the field would start to garner the respect Danny lacks.
When he looks at the current roster, does he see a better version of last year's team?
"We'll see," Schoen said. "I like some of the guys that we brought in in free agency. I like some of the guys that we drafted, but they've still got to go out there and do it on Sundays."
Some of the guys? This scared answer routine is getting very very stale. As a GM if you don't think the current roster is better than the last one then you have not done your job- have you?
Has he assembled a team he believes can challenge for the division title?
"We'll see," Schoen said. "Our guys (starters) didn't play a lot in the preseason. They played that Carolina game as a unit. We're still practicing and getting better daily, and we'll see what it looks like when we get to the regular season."
Is that our fault the starters didn't practice enough or play pre season enough?
With quarterback Daniel Jones' increased comfort level and the new receivers he will throw to, does Schoen think the Giants should have a "much more explosive, big play" passing game this season. Schoen wasn't about to crack.
"We'll see," Schoen repeated. "
Ok Joe-- let me put this as simply as I can: You Better Hope To High Hell The Offense is more explosive. The correct answer is the one the owner knows-" It Better Be. "
When asked "what kind of litmus test are you looking for to say 'yes, we're better than what we were?'" The G.M. deflected that query.
"Again, it's too early to tell," he said. "We've got to get these guys out there and see they click together. Again, we brought in some new pieces, Waller, on defense Bobby, some of the defensive lineman that are depth players, two young corners. So, we'll see how this group comes together. It's still early, we haven't played any games and that'll be probably a better answer later in the year once we see how these guys react."
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
I am really happy we grabbed Simmons & Basham these are quality adds!! There is a strange feeling of putting this together on the fly and not really having the pieces in place; hoping they may fall your way late. At a certain point we have to find a core group of players and stick with it. All of these new faces coming late and weird guys like Paris Campball.. It's an unsteady feel to the rebuild.
Our journey together starts now. Our goal for the season is quite simple. We have 4 games against Dallas and Eagles... it's time to start winning THOSE games. The rest of the season will fall into place naturally. This Has Been An impartial Review. ~stoney
