from a friend of mine that attended camp today. His observations reinforce Shurmur's comments about doing different things each day. With the rotation of players between the 1st and 2nd teams as well as the mixture of things he has the players working on, Shurmur should be in a great position to make the most out of the preseason.
Today the players were in shells but no hard contact, except for BJ Goodson on a Receiver over the middle but they hugged and made up.
We saw John Jerry getting third team snaps at RT and he did pretty well except on one play. Chad Wheeler was moved to LT second team. I would like to see Jerry moved up to second team RT. Then if he does well there, compete for the starting job.
I know that I’m the exception but I really like Kyle Lauletta. He has great feet and sets up so nicely, has strong Pocket Presence, reads through his progressions all the way down. He throws a nice pass that doesn’t sail and I saw one play where he dropped a long sideline pass right in the Bucket.
Amba Etta-Tawo has the skinniest legs I have seen on a player but…the man has game. He’s also in Special Teams drills. He’s a second year player from Syracuse so maybe the BigHitter knows something of him. He’s competing for the 4-5 WR spot.
Wayne Gallman has quietly looked good. He’s doing a nice job of squaring his shoulders to pick up extra yardage. He’s going to have to prove he can block to get any snaps but I see him as a keeper.
Darian Thompson is still getting first team snaps, so don’t be so quick to write him off.
The Defense is mixing it up for the Offensive Line and Bettcher is throwing the kitchen sink at them. From stunts to blitzes to delayed blitzes and dropping players, three hands down or more and Stacking a side. This has to be a huge help to preparing the Offensive Line, the RB’s in Blitz pickup and the QB in recognition to get the pass off to the Hot Read. I have never seen this at a Giants Training Camp. Most time the Offense wins but 25% of the time would have resulted in a sack or broken play. The fans don’t know this as they just cheer the completion. The Press does, I’m sure.
Lots of work on Special Teams Fundamentals and Offensive Line Centers picking up a double team today.
The Goal Line drills were Run Based today.
The TE formations were predominately singles today. Lining up often as Inline but not chipping and going our for a pass. Sometimes as the Inside Slot Receiver in a two TE Set as a 4th wideout or Single set. Mostly strong side right. On a couple of plays I saw a 2 TE on one side Inline. We saw some 21 Personnel too. Shane Smith had a lot of snaps as the FB.
Again no RPO’s and I don’t recall much play action today as the other days. The 11’s were mostly out of Shotgun and mostly Passing Plays today.
