I come to this site because I believe there is more reasonable and intelligent thoughts and discussion about the Giants than all of the knuckleheads on talk radio. I know there are some posters who fly off the handle but for the most part I always feel like I learn some new things and at times change my mind because someone posts something that make me think differently.
So I'm sure when some people see my subject line the thought is going to be, "is this guy nuts!?!?"
Going into this year I was not confident at all that the Giants were going to make that next step to consistent playoff contender. I believed that last year had blinded some and despite last years results there was still a vast talent gap between the Giants and the truly good teams in the league. Now, I am disappointed and surprised they are so bad. I thought they would at least be competitive. But, should we be surprised?
What is happening now I think should have happened last year. New GM, new coach, player turnover ... if the Giants were playing this bad last year I think we would all be saying "this is something we have to go through in order to get to where we want the team to be". But after last year I think the expectation(s) that there was going to be another step forward ignores a lot of issues. The physical talent on this team is greatly lacking. Does anyone look at any part of this team and say "we are almost as good as Dallas/Philadelphia/San Francisco" ... if we are all being honest the answer is "no" (or should it be "NO FRIGGIN WAY!!) it is why I was ambivalent about making the playoffs last year. Sure it sounds great but the Giants needed high draft picks and as many of them as possible.
I said on this board that I had a lot of good thoughts about the Schoen/Daboll leadership. I still feel that way but there are some hard questions that need to be answered.
- did Schoen/Daboll buy into last year too much? did they believe that after one year they had corrected over 10 years of bad drafting and free agent decisions? I think they did. Now they have to correct that. First thing I would do is go into the locker room and tell every one there that going forward playing time will be earned, draft position and salary don't matter any longer ... if a player wants out let Schoen know and he should try to accommodate that request ... but know that what is best for the Giants is all that matters
- as far as players that I would trade here is my list (and I don't want to bring back some other teams reject I want draft picks)
S. Barkley - wrong pick initially and even though immensely talented injured too much
X. McKinney - at one point thought he was a building block, but ... there is some disconnect there, looked AWFUL against Miami
L. Williams - this was just a bad move that was made worse by the contract Gettleman gave him
D. Waller - is he shot? would another team take a flyer on him?
D. Lawrence - tough one and don't see it but might bring a good return
A. Ojulari - be lucky to get anything at this point
A. Jackson - don't think he has played all that bad but another player that bring some value back
D. Jones - I know this sounds like piling on, and NO team will take that contract, but has he really shown he is the answer? NE?
*let's be nonest there are any number of players that could be traded and would they be missed?
- Schoen is here because of the absolute mess Reese & Gettleman made of the draft(s) but there are legitimate questions about how he has hndled the draft - was not a fan of the Thibideaux pick, thought he was drafted on potential and not actual production (even though he has shown some signs of life the past few games), Neal, this is a head scratcher, he had all of the pedigree coming out of Alabama, and he played well in spurts last year, hard to explain
- Daboll and his coaching staff, another huge head scratcher, they seemed to push most of the right buttons last year, but this year they look lost ... are E. Neal's problems physical? mental? or has the coaching been inadequate? there were 2 D-Linemen signed in off season (sorry, names escape me) that were supposed to help stop the run and EVERYONE runs against them ... where are the adjustments? why does it seem players are out of position or not playing with any enthusiasm?
So where am I as a NY Giants fan right now? frustrated as hell but still optimistic Schoen/Daboll can turn it around ... this year has to be a learning year for them, they need to realize success one year doesn't mean the same next year ... players on a contract year almost always out perform their actual worth ... players who have been mediocre (DJ) or often injured (SB) don't deserve large extensions ... DON'T bring in older players (especially players who were stars at one time) while rebuilding, in all likelihood there is a reason they were available (DW)
I would love to see Schoen do a press conference where he gets in front of the reporters and says "I (we) screwed up ... and this won't happen again ... we are going to get better, stronger, faster, and smarter ... and it starts with me" I think it would put the players on notice and make the fans feel better
And before everyone thinks it's the end of the line look at Dallas tonight, they got totally run over by S.F. ... N.E. looks as bad or even worse than the Giants and that is with the supposed G.O.A.T. at head coach (but a lousy GM) ... I've taken my shots at this team/organization over the years, I haven't always been right, I might be wrong now, but the Giants can get better, and be consistent winners again
So I'm sure when some people see my subject line the thought is going to be, "is this guy nuts!?!?"
