The draft record so far for Shoen is really not great. He has a couple guys who show up every game, and play fairly well. Banks is the one who plays the most consistently I think.
He has others who show up sporadically, and disappear completely other games. Thibs, McFadden and Wan'dale are the most notable. McFadden looks great if he can pursue at an angle; but he's pretty useless if the run is at him. He's not a legit 3 down LB. He was one who was victimized for a TD Sunday. Thibs is never really totally bad, he just isn't the #5 pick a lot of games. Wan'dale flashes; but, he is a second round pick and should be more consistent.
He's got a lot that aren't showing much progress at all. Schmitz, Neal, and Hyatt lead the charge there. Schmitz play against NO was just aweful. Undisciplined play that failed to coordinate with his guards. Hyatt can look so good, and then be a bust the next game. Neal, we all see it.
The drafting, and the subsequent coaching of draftees has not been good, at all. If it doesn't improve this team will NEVER turn around. That begs the $64,000 question. Why do we think that this GM and this coaching staff can turn this team around? We have scant evidence of that so far. Sure, maybe it's time for Daboll to reassess his coaches and make some changes, that's a given; but why will he find better coaches this time than he did last time? Again, there's little reason to believe that will happen. Why would Shoen all of a sudden become a great drafter? Teams that turn around usually show signs of it early on with great draftees, and we're not getting that. Those teams draft well, and our team doesn't. I'm afraid that's the bottom line.
It's apparent that Shoen will get at least four years as GM, and Daboll will get at least one more year as coach, probably two. I'd hate to say it; but, that sure looks like two more solid seasons of mediocrity to me.
