Sure, we can say injuries, poor coaching decisions, and the endless chicken-and-egg QB/OL situation, but another issue raises its hideous head: Failure to score even ONE TD in the first quarter of every game. I am not about to do the research as to whether any other team in the history of the NFL has managed this dubious feat this late into a season, but it really doesn't matter, does it?
The failure of the Giants to do this one seemingly common feat has had a catastrophic effect on the team and the season. For one, in most cases it means that the team is typically playing from behind, putting more pressure on an offense which by most metrics, is measurably the worst in the NFL. It also means that getting behind by two scores (except for the outlier game against Arizona) is the proverbial kiss of death for the Giants.
What is the answer? More scripted plays? A complete overhaul of offensive philosophy? The ugly fact that the Giants have literally no talent on that side of the ball except for a lonely LT and an overworked RB is a severe indictment of the entire organization.
To go this far into a season without inflicting a single touchdown on the opposition in what is an entire quarter of a game is shameful and in NFL terms, almost criminally negligent. It is a recipe for losing football and an indictment of coaching and substandard personnel. It is obvious that without something resembling a professional football offensive line and a quarterback that can manage a decent drive resulting in a trip to the end zone within the first fifteen minutes of a game, we are in for more of the same. I bring this up because our first quarter futility is little mentioned among the many shortcomings that led to this lost season.
