According to overthecap.com, the Giants have $34.9 million in cap space for the 2024 season. With only 39 players currently under contract for 2024 and beyond, there will be some additions to come.
As you would expect the biggest space is taken up by the big contracts doled out this offseason, Daniel Jones ($47.1 million), Andrew Thomas ($23.7), Dexter Lawrence ($22.1) and Darren Waller ($14.5). Only Waller's deal can they get out of relatively easy. As a post 6/1 cut, Waller would count for $2.45 in dead money while freeing up $12 million in cap space.
As for the rest of the roster, the only two players that can be released that would create significant cap savings are Darius Slayton and Mark Glowinski. Slayton would count $1.75 in dead money but save $6 million. Glowinski is a $1.5 dead hit and saves $5.7 in cap space.
With the lack of big contracts, there are not many options for restructuring should the Giants look to create more room. Smaller cuts can save a little here and there. Azeez Ojulari ($1.58), Carlos Basham ($1.42), Aaron Robinson ($1.36) and Gary Brightwell ($1.05) can all be released without a lot of dead money.
The Giants only have $11 million in dead money so far for 2024, which is almost entirely from trading Leonard Williams ($10.6).
So while there is available cap space, there is going to be a lot of holes on the roster yet to fill. Decisions on Saquon Barkley, Adoree Jackson, Xavier McKinney, Isaiah Simmons, Isaiah Hodgins, Parris Campbell, Darnay Holmes, Shane Lemieux and Matt Peart will have to be made. And either new contracts signed or their replacements signed.
The exact cap numbers will not be known until the league announces what the 2024 cap will be sometime before the start of the league year in March.
Joe Schoen has managed to recover the Giants cap from the disaster that Dave Gettleman left him. It'll be interesting to see how active the Giants will be in free agency going forward. With big holes on the offensive line, potential holes at RB and Safety, the Giants could look for a few veterans to plug into the roster for 2024. I don't see a huge spending spree coming, but a more targeted approach by Schoen and the Giants.
