Man! What has happened to this franchise? The Giants are a complete mess and things don't look to be getting better. I thought the Schoen/Daboll team was going to correct things and at this point my confidence and enthusiasm are just about shot. Every time I pick up a paper, turn on the radio, the TV, or check my email I dread what I am going to find out ... Schoen/Daboll were supposed to be a fresh start but now it looks like a rerun of the last 10 to 15 years!
I am concerned that John Mara is not letting his GM do what he hired him to do. I base that on an newslwtter I read right after the trade deadline, that the Giants had received several calls from other teams wanting to trade for Saquon Barkley and Darius Slayton but Mara put the kibosh on the offers. He didn't want to have empty seats at the end of the season. If this is true this is just nuts ... to this day I believe Barkley and D. Jones should have been traded when Schoen got here in 2022. Why? they got great years from the 2 of them ... ON CONTRACT YEARS! They overpaid for Jones, pissed off Barkley and where are they now? Barkley probably leaves for no compensation. Stuck with Jones for maybe 2 more years ... or more if they renegotiate his contract. STUPID.
I defended the poor record/play in the beginning of the season (2023) saying that the '22 season gave them a sense of false hope, too many things broke their way. What happened ... 2023 is what happened. Jones played like those of us who do not believe he is the long term answer, Saquon got hurt, the OL, Defense, ST's regressed ... once again the Giants were a laughing stock.
I have serious concerns that Daboll is fit to remain and go forward as head coach. I know that is a strong statement. And, admittedly, firing him doesn't make the Giants look any better. But with everything that has happened this year and continues to happen I have lost faith in his ability to lead this team. I have NO problem with a head coach making changes on his staff if they aren't doing their jobs or are up to his standards. I don't care if a coach yells his staff, this is the NFL grow up and be an adult. But, being a petulant tyrant means you are in over your head. If Wink had to go, fine, do it like a man ... don't fire his two top assistants behind his back. Again, from another newsletter, Daboll supposedly got mad at Wink for not admiring the New England Patriot way ... you are the head coach of the NY Giants, who cares about the Patriots! When Joe Judge got fired most people pointed to the crazy, meandering press conference he gave in Chicago (I think), but I believe he started to lose the team the year before when he twisted himself in knots to fire his OL coach Columbo in order to hire another coach ... who NEVER resigned! Then, that stupid press conference after the Eagles pulled their QB against the Washington team and how any team he coached would not disrespect the league ... guess what? you won 6 games! you didn't deserve to be in the playoff hunt! I'm very concerned that Daboll is following the same path. And, add to it the whispers (rumors) that Daboll had been passed over for other coaching jobs due to his personality and that Buffalo let him go to the Giants because he couldn't get along with McDermott ... the red flags are waving the Giants right in the face!
I don't see how they can keep Mike Kafka as OC. Kafka wants to make a name for himself and now Daboll says he is taking over the play calling. From where I sit that is another bad move. Let your OC run the offense and your DC run the defense. Should we even talk about the DC position not being filled? Again, the whispers (rumors) is that Daboll is on a short leash and why come to the Giants when there will most likely be a new coach next year ... as I said earlier, what a mess!
I hate the idea of changing coaches AGAIN but is a new coach the best (only) way forward? I don't know, I'm not sure ... and let me add, the biggest thing facing the Giants is a lack of physical talent across the roster. Better players will make the coach look better, but I do believe Schoen needs to get this under control and take matters into his hands before he has to replaced too. I was very positive that the Schoen/Daboll team were going to make a difference ... right now I'm concerned we are looking at a disaster getting worse.
