I haven't been here in a bit, but I thought I did drop by and offer my perspective as the collective ire towards Schoen are resonating.
Losing Barkley and McKinney seems to be the focus of the anger at the Giants GM. I don't share that anger. This team is, at best, the third most talented roster in their own division without having to overpay for Barkley and McKinney.
Barkley was always the wrong draft pick for this team when Gettleman selected him second overall. There was no need to compound that mistake by giving him a contract that would rival or exceed what the Eagles gave him. Sure, losing Barley to the Eagles hurts. But the Giants have far more pressing needs: OL (a forever project for this franchise), Edge rusher (they got one and I would rather pay for a premium position than for a RB), a number 1 WR, and overall depth.
But let's be honest, keeping Barkley and McKinney, while overpaying for both, would not make them better than the Cowboys or the Eagles. The harsh reality is that both would be high-priced luxuries on a team that is, with them, in the bottom ten of the league in overall talent. Simply stated RB and S are not premium positions in the NFL and a team as bereft of overall talent can't afford to overpay for those positions.
That is not to say that Schoen is above criticisms, he most certainly is. But not overpaying for Barkley and McKinney aren't high on my list of my criticisms of him.
This team is still very much a work in progress to be a consistent winner. And the jury is still out on whether Schoen is the man to build up the roster talent to turn the fortunes of this underachieving franchise around. But I am not at all upset at his decision not to overpay Barkley.
That is all I have to say on the subject.
