Mods, let me know if I put this topic in the correct place and with the correct title. Otherwise, feel free to move and/or rename it.
Hello BBWC,
Like many of us, I'm a Giants fan because of my dad. I was born and raised in Buffalo Bills country, but my dad grew up in Queens. I once asked him why he and his brothers became Giants fans instead of Jets fans. He laughed and replied "well, the Jets didn't exist yet!"
As far back as I can remember, the Giants were on the TV in our house. Until the age of 9, I thought it was a nuisance. The football games were what kept me from watching cartoons or playing Nintendo. Then the Bills made it to Super Bowl 25. The entire area, and all my friends, were hyped. I decided I would watch the big game to see what all the fuss was about. But, even then I knew that I would be rooting for the Giants. I was excited for my friends, but I was even more excited to connect with my dad over something new.
You all know how that game ended and it was so fun that I've been following the team closely ever since. We've watched almost every Giants game together since then. Even when I was living at college or in one of the neighboring cities, I would drive home for the games. I didn't care if the team was bad, I just liked watching with my dad.
Sadly, it's looking like this will be his last season. He was diagnosed with lung cancer a few years ago and the latest diagnosis says the treatments have stopped working and he likely has about 7 months left to live. Obviously, anything could happen, he could have a few years, he could have even less than 7 months. But, that's the doctors' estimate.
In some ways, it's kinda neat that the 100th season might be his last. Go out on a nice round number, lol. I don't expect much from this year's team and I'm not even particularly hoping they beat the odds for my dad's sake. Like I said above, I don't care if they're bad, I just like watching with my dad. After SB25, I wanted the football gods to let us see the Giants win just one championship as a full-fledged fan. The Collins/Fassel Giants got us close and Manning/Coughlin Giants got us TWO championships! I asked for one and got two; I've always said, it's all bonus after that.
So, that's all. I just wanted to share what I'm going through with a group of people that I thought would understand. Obviously, we're hoping for many more seasons together, but if this is his last one, we're going to enjoy it as much as we can.
