Some facts and opinions as to why I believe this is a much better football team than last year. I am not saying we will win 9 games but regardless of where we end up this team has more stability moving forward. I do feel we need another starting QB for next year. We should draft one and bring in a vet to compete with Jones, who we should NOT just release and eat $21+ Mil next year. Let him sit on the bench as a backup instead of releasing him and someone picking him up with the potential of him returning to haunt us. Imagine he comes back on another team on our payroll and beats us. Screw that, sit the bench.
1) Our OLine is vastly improved and are playing fairly well for a unit together for 6 games. Thomas is a huge loss. Here are the numbers for the naysayers.
After 6 games last year we gave up 33 sacks on our way to giving up a ridiculous record of 85. So far after 6 games of being together they have given up 14. That is a differential of 19 sacks over 6 games. Three less per game. We are averaging more passing yards and rushing yards per game than last year. The OL is better in every category.
2) Our RB depth. Don't know about you guys but this is the most excited I've been about one of our RB's since the first two years of SNAKEquon.
It's early but I love Tracy. Miller, Grey and Motor make this a pretty dynamic group of backs. Even building around Tracy and Miller next year is an improvement. Haven't seen enough of Singletary yet and Grey will be replaced sooner then later.
3) Our Wide Receivers. Nabors, Wandale and Slayton are all playmakers that create some space. Hyatt is a huge disappointment and I can see why he is not playing. He gets no seperation and can't go up and grab a ball.
Trade him for a 5th rounder next year. For now I'd keep Wheaton-Ford as my fourth receiver for next year. Hodgkins can play as well.
4) Our DL and overall front 7.
I love the way they are getting to the QB. Dex, DJ Davidson, Burns, Chatham, Ojulari, Thibs all playing hard and getting better. Here is proof.
Last year we had exactly 5 sacks after 6 games. YES 5 sacks. What a freakin joke. This year we have turned it around and I believe we lead the NFL with 26 or 27 sacks thru 6 games. From Last in sacks after 6 games last year to first in sacks this year. In addition it has not had to be all Bobby Okereke and here is why. RB's and TE's were constantly in our backfield last year forcing our CB's and Okereke to be in on more tackles. This year he has had more DL help along with better play from McFadden et al.
5) Our coaching staff. It is evident that coaching helps assist with these numbers. We had a very similar defense last year under WINK minus all his blitzing and we are killing last years numbers. We are averaging more yards a game and giving up less per game. In fact we are outgaining our opponents thus far.
6) I think Joe Schoen had a great draft this year and his future could be bright. I think no matter what he stays at least another year.
I know our 2 and 4 record seems like it is not an improvement but we were lucky to be 1 and 5 last year by beating Arizona when they were killing us. We could easily be 4 and 2 this year if not 5 and 1.
I like the direction but feel we do need a QB for all the reasons I have mentioned above.
