I thought it would be interesting to look at PFF grades and rank. Although sometimes the PFF grades puzzle me, I think overall they put things into proper perspective. So this is what it looks like after 4 games.
Eli is ranked 9th with an above average starter grade. No running game and dropped passes. Not bad.
Vereen and Perkins have terrible grades with ranks of 30th and 55th. Darkwa and Gallman do not have enough touches to be ranked and have meaningful grades. I liked what I saw from Gallman.
The entire WR corp graded very poorly. I thought that Shepard would grade out well. The only decent grade among the entire WR corp was Shepard's run blocking. The ranks for Shepard, Lewis, Beckham. and Marshall are 57, 69, 86 and 89 respectfully. These ranks certainly put Eli's rank of 9 in perspective.
As receivers Ellison and Engram graded as adequate starters. Both graded very poorly as blockers. Engram is not a big surprise. So what is going on with Ellison? He has been terribly underutilized.
As expected Flowers and Hart have horrific grades as run blockers. To my surprise, Flowers ranked 30th as a pass blocker with a low average grade for a starter.
With the exception of Pugh's run blocking grade, Pugh, Jerry and Fluker have extremely poor grades. Even Pugh's low average starter grade is way down from previous years. Jerry has always had poor run blocking grades. However he graded out above average as a pass blocker last year. Fluker has struggled since being drafted and the only question in my mind is why is he on the roster?
What the heck has happened to Richburg? Early in his career he looked like he was headed to be a perennial pro bowler. Now he ranks in the middle of the pack. Jones' pass blocking grade is average for a starter. His run blocking is horrible
Jenkins graded out well above average for a starter in both pass coverage and run defense. However his rank of 20th is below past years. DRC's pass coverage is above average for a starter but his run defense is horrific. Apple is just the opposite. His pass coverage is horrific but his run defense is well above average.
Collins is ranked as the 9th best safety in the league. As the season progresses I expect him to be in the top 5. Thompson is a big disappointment with absolutely horrific grades. My question is why is he starting?
Goodson's run defense is above average for a starter. His pass coverage is poor. Kennard's run defense is also above average. His pass coverage is below average but at a level that suggests his grade may go up as the season progresses. Goodson and Kennard rank 31 and 43 respectfully. Munson and Casillas grades are horrific with the exception of Casillas' pass coverage which is average for a starter.
Thomas, Okwara and Bromley grades are horrific. Harrison grades out at the elite level and Tomlinson grades out at the above average starter level. Both Harrison and Tomlinson are excellent against the run. Neither gets much push rushing the passer.
Both Vernon and JPP are huge disappointment. JPP's grades are horrific. Vernon's overall grade ranks him at 61 among edge rushers. Suffice to say both need to refund the Giants for income not earned.
Commentary
1. Sadly, JPP is proving why I did not want to see him signed. I just hope he turns it around.
2. A very telling fact is that not a single player on the entire defense has a pass rushing grade of adequate for a starter. In fact, with the exception of Collins, the rest of the defensive grades for pass rushing are horrific.
3. The performance deterioration of a number of players particularly OBJ, Pugh, Richburg and Jerry suggests to me that there are deep seated problems throughout the coaching organization. Harrison, Collins and Eli appear to be the only players that are performing at or near what could be reasonably expected.
