Why Drew Brees? Why oh why couldn't an average quarterback come to town. Against the Falcons Brees threw for 396 passing yard and three touchdowns and capped the final two drives with rushing touchdowns. His spinning, game-tying 7-yard touchdown run was one for the career highlight reel.
"Drew is the greatest, I'm not saying it because I play with him. He's the greatest. How could you dispute? How could you argue he's not the greatest quarterback to ever live? What more does he have to do? Seriously. It's an honor to play with him and to watch him."- Left tackle Terron Armstead
"Drew is the GOAT," Armstead said. "So to see the GOAT spinning on two people, I was definitely excited. It was crazy."
It's not going to come easy for the Giants. Brees is coming off an epic game against the Falcons in which he willed his team to victory with runs as well as passes. Brees has always been a thorn for the Giants, his highly accurate passes and ability to throw people open has ripped our defenses in the past. Getting into a high scoring shootout doesn't seem to work again Brees.
Should the Giants try and take the air out of the ball, control the clock and Force the Saints into a lows scoring slug out?
The Giant finally made the changes to their running game that we had been begging for. We are now running downhill and gone on the annoying check downs. Eli has been told to move his feet a bit and if he check's down to just throw it ten yards. That's working for now. The two best plays for Eli last game one was a throw left into two high coverage (finally) to Beckham in a tight window more than ten yards and he caught it!-THAT was the throw and That was the 'forcing' the ball that we had been imploring the Giants to utilize. Once done it frees up other parts of the game. The other great play was the hand off to Barkley right when he scored, Eli basically ran the RPO - he looked the part anyway hunching over and thrusting the ball into Barkley's arms and looking like he might just bring it back out.
Running downhill is more fun isn't it? Gone were the delay hand offs and side by side stuff... We got a good glimpse of the real Saquan. Was I worried when suddenly he wasn't on the field... yup. We seem to be operating better as an offense with Ellison in their at tight end. Everyone has clear job responsibilities, somehow with Evan Engram running around like a ballerina, it's just confusing-- too many receivers.
The trouble is these Texans-- that's a bad team. I want to shoot off into the stars about being back in the playoff hunt but not until we beat the Saints. How to do that. Plan A-) Throw the kitchen sink. Blitz play after play after play get into Brees' feet force him to throw on the run all game. Plan B-) Drop A lot. Only rush three and still get there somehow. Clog up mid range passing lanes, Linebackers drop deep.
If we do that Alvin Kamara will destroy us on the ground. This is a pick your poison offense we are going up against with a prime receiver as well Michael Thomas. I was high on Thomas from Ohio St. in his draft very high and he has turned into a player who puts up the type of numbers we are used to with Odell. Thomas has touchdowns too. This matchup is the most interesting in this upcoming game-- Odell needs his TD's; he needs TWO in this game...
Old friend Jay Bromley rotates in on defense for the Saints. The weakness for the saints would be in their corners... still the Giant coaches have to ask themselves if it's worth going after them and scoring a lot. Do we really want that? Or would we rather control the clock in a big way?
The Saints have always been annoyingly tricky on offense. Sean Peyton sees to that; They will perhaps run a wildcat set up, they may split Brees all the way out wide they have a backup QB named Taysom Hill who the Saints have been using in a variety of trick plays and special teams situations. The Giants must keep track of when Hill comes into the game or returns a kick. The truth is Hill is not good enough to even be their number two QB but he's super quick and a slippery runner who has paid off big dividends already for the Saints this year.
Hill is Big at 6-foot-2, 221 pounds. Last week, the Saints used him as kick returner, he gave them a 47-yard kickoff return.
** Here is where it gets tricky the Saints also have a RPO offense or more of a read-option run... not so much pass because Hill not the best passer but it doesn't mater.
In Week 1 this year Hill lined up at QB (Brees split wide as a WR) and handed the ball off to Alvin Kamara for a touchdown run.
Last game Hill kept the ball himself two times, both on third downs once for a first down and once for a big 35-yard gain on third-and-2.
The Giants wil have to be ready for this wildcat like set up and trickery on third downs.
This all adds up to a really tough task for the Giants. We must get our running game going and control a lot of clock. The Saints D can be beat beat bad and it's tempting to get into a shoot out and maybe at some point in the game it will turn into that. But to start off control ball and I WOULD NOT DEFER THE OPENING KICK))) Coach!!!! It hasn't worked once in three games and this would be a nice change of pace we begin the clock management with a long drive if we win the toss TAKE THE BALL! and I'm sure something will slow us up and we have to settle for a field goal... but my dream would be to opening drive march it down the field and score a TD>
This is Beckhams BREAK OUT GAME<--- It has to be. The corners are suspect for the saints and film review will show Odell open quite a bit last game for longer throws. For the Saints- Thomas leads the NFC and NFL in receiving yardage and receptions.
At times we are going to have to rush three & one LB and get there.
The Saints like to control clock as well, thats why I think we could confuse them into an ugly low scoring game. Once under Mcadoo we beat the SAINTS THS way just uglied it up in a low scoring affair.
Alvin Kamara- Yikes.
Kamara had 31 total touches last game. 16 rushes for 66 yards (long of 17)---> receiving-wise Kamara was targeted 20 times by Brees<------ TWENTY!!!! finishing with 15 receptions for 124 yards. You have to treat this RB as a receiver (just like Barkely) Another great matchup. Kamara vs Barkley. This is a game of match ups: Odell vs Michael Thomas/ Kamara vs Barkley/ Eli vs Brees. For the Giant game planners they may have to hold back some of their offensive fire power-- this would be the game to go over 30 points... but that could lead to a 33-30 loss. A grinding, bruising 23-17 game may be the best way to defeat the Saints right now.
And remember all that talent for the Saints offense and it's a third string back up QB who is really the game changing weapon here-- it's a great NFL story (undrafted white guy BYU) the Giants have to reign in- Tayom Hill<------
"It's a huge spark," Brees said. "I think what it is more so than anything, obviously he's an exciting player, he's an explosive player, he can do a lot of things. But, just his willingness to do anything and everything he's asked to do (is impressive).
"Listen, the guy is a quarterback, OK? I think the guy can be a really good quarterback in this league for a long time, but for him to basically do whatever he's been asked to do. Hey Taysom, can you cover some kicks? Yes. Taysom, can you go block a punt? Yes. Taysom, can you run a fake punt? Can you hold? Can you return kickoffs? And now come in and get us a critical first down and make a momentum changing play like that is off the charts."
THIS SHOULD BE A GEAT EXCITING GAME & MEGA TEST FOR OUR D COORDINATOR... all of our coaches really.
Lets keep it low scoring~stoney
