I’m no coach or player. Just a fan. Some of us fans are pretty smart on this board. I’m sure some will add to this and disagree with some and so on. That’s ok. That’s why we post. To chat and vent or praise. This team isn’t too far off. It really isn’t It’s clear Eli is on the back 9. Maybe even on the 16tj hole Eli needs something this team doesn’t have. Protection. Or does it? I’m all for a game plan and breaking down film on the team we are about to play and putting together a plan to attack and defend. That’s all in good. But is this team ready for a complex game plan when they can’t even Get the basics down correctly.
1. This team lacks confidence. It starts with the line and trickles fast to the QB. The coaches need to realize what they have and dial it back A LOT. The reason why this team just seems to get beat in every aspect of the game is they are playing too slow. What do I mean? They are thinking to much. Let’s cut the playbook in half. Let’s get a few plays down to where these players can run the play without thinking. So they can play fast football. Get some positive plays. Even if they loose. Get those plays right. Add to it the next week. Play fast smart football. It builds confidence and that can quickly turn the team around. They just seem lost out there. A step behind everyone they play.
2. Move Odell all over the formation. Yes. Odell needs to line up everywhere. Slot. Outside inside. In the back field. In bunch or by himself. Move him everywhere every play Motion him. Football is a game of mismatched. Moving Odell around will not only crest a miss match for Odell but other players as well. When Odell gets the ball almost every time it’s for at least a first down.
3. A little more Max protection. Sometime spreading the defense out witj 3 or 4 receives or moving your RB out of the backfield is a bad idea. The line can barely handle 4 rushers Asia is. You can give this team 13 playersthdy will still allow pressure. Keep your TEs into block. Let Odell and Shepherd work the field and Barkley can work the short passes Eli needs time and he needs to trust his blocking. Yesterday when he had time and a clean pocket. He played like he didn’t. He has zero trust in his protection. He his missing open reads. He isn’t getting his feet right even when there isn’t a reason to panic he is. By the way. Eli can’t set up a screen and sell it if his life depended on it. I don’t know if it’s because he is to slow or just doesn’t have the athleticism to do it. His screen plays are terrible.
4. Maybe try a little 12 personnel but have an extra OT in there as a TE. Not just on short yardage or goal but on first and 10 If you have too. Line him up in the backfield as a FB and allow him to pick up the blitz. Let the front 5 worry about the main 4 lineman. Do we trust Flowers to do that?
5. How come every team in the NFL can get there HB on a LB and we just can’t manage to get that look witj one of the best receiving backs in football. How about a wheel route or the HB up the seem. Maybe an narrow fade in the mirror of the field. Let’s get Barkley 1 on 1 with a linebacker
I’m sure there is a lot to add. But these are a few things the coaches need to try. I feel like it’s the same thing. Square peg in a circle hole game after game
