The reaction I've seen from fans all over social media has been an utter disgrace. I shudder to think what the 80s and 90s would've turned out to be like if there was an internet back in those days. I'm sure the fans would've been all over Phil Simms constantly about his inconsistent play. Or they would've wanted him to get hurt, as some have said about Eli, to see what Jeff Rutledge has because he is a little more mobile after all.
Not to mention what would've been the criticism of Bill Parcells and Earnhardt and their archaic offense in a time when the West Coast offense was the growing fad. What would've the criticism been like then? Nah screw the run game we need to get a receiver like Jerry Rice or an o-coordinator that has more creativity than this run, run, pass offense. Fire Earndhardt and Parcells after 4 games!! They're no good! Most fans probably would've wanted Parcells canned after his first disastrous season and for Mara to have sold the team back then or during the many seasons where they were good but not good enough to keep up with the Niners, and high flying Rams...until they did.
The response so far has been an utter joke. Two seasons ago, TWO!!!, Eli threw for over 4k yards and 26 touchdowns. The season before that 35 touchdowns. Now all of sudden lets run him out of town tarred and feathered because AFTER FOUR GAMES IN A NEW OFFENSE WITH A REBUILDING OFFENSIVE LINE he hasn't been able to click 100% yet. Lets see what Tanney or Lauletta have? Are you frigging kidding me???!! For crying out loud we just benched our starting RT for a backup and that has been an improvement!!! How bad has the side of the line been? Has Eli missed throws? Yes he has. He has also made a lot of throws that ignorant fans never want to mention where he threw it in tight spaces. But lets ignore that because it messes up a biased narrative.
Four games against the Jaguars, Saints, Texans and Cowboys and we're 1-3. Fire Gettleman!! Fire Shurmur!! Why? Because in one offseason and four games they haven't been able to fix the mess that was left to them and took years to create? How many games did you expect the team to win this year? They won THREEE last year!!! They start out this season with a tough schedule yet if you look at the remaining schedule a reasonable argument can be made that there are 7-8 wins there for the taking. Guess what? Thats improvement if they do that. Last year at this time if you looked at the schedule there is no way you could find 8 wins.
But all of that doesn't matter because its about supporting the narrative. If the Giants play great and Eli plays great this year the people that have wanted him out of town since 2005 will still find something to criticize or point out a throw he missed. If Barkley runs for 200 yards they will still find a play where he tried to bounce it out and made a loss and all of sudden he's just an "oversized scat back." It doesn't matter if the Giants win 8 games and show improvement. Certain fans will find anything to support their ludicrous and biased narrative that Eli stinks, Barkley shouldn't have been drafted, and that the Maras, one of the best family of owners in all of sports, should sell the team.
I said TC shouldn't have been fired when he was. Many wanted him gone a long time before that but it looks like they made a mistake in firing the wrong guy. I didn't like Mac from his first day but gave him a chance. Once the wheels fell off it was time to cut ties. For reasonable fans and not the one with perverted agendas they will see what the season brings. Shurmur needs to improve on the offensive play calling. Eli needs take a few more chances and shake the shell shock that he has. If at least we finish with a sold left side of the line thats improvement. The defense has been good but need to get better. Lets see where we are at the end of the year because guess what? These same people are most likely gonna be on the team next year. So either you're a fan and want to see them succeed or you're just a hater with a biased agenda based on ZERO knowledge of football.
