Wednesday Defensive Day: The narrative in the media/Twitter is a little overboard on the play of FS Curtis Riley, please see my thoughts below:
Play 1: Kamara Big TD
- Power versus what looks to be an interior stunt(guess)
- open field tackle needed vs. RB w/full head of steam
- Riley: solid body control & helmet aim,
- needs more contact on RB’s lower body
- good stiff arm from a top tier RB
- Reality: FS makes the play: he’s doing his job... he misses: TD
Play 2: Kamara RZ TD
- Midzone Run
- Riley solid gap fill & closure
- BUT lowers shoulder for impact contact only
- does not go for wrap, only gets piece of shifty RB
- this may work at college level, does not in NFL
Play 3: Delay Screen to Kamara
- Play Action w/Deep Over route draws him to left
- +range X the field stemming from solid play speed
- +angle, sideline acts as a defender helping BUT
- +FootBall IntelligenceI(vs. OL Blockers), default aggressive right at RB
- +closure, +finish
Play 4: Riley Tackle from Middle of Field Safety Position
- Cover 1 ManFree coverage
- solid play speed & angle to in breaking route
- +closure, +pad level, +wrap
- His play strength can/will improve, looking for more confidence for bigger hits/pops as the season goes on
- Remember he is 6-0 190 lbs and Josh Hill is 6-5 250 lb
Play 5: Riley Tackle from Deep 1/2 Safety
- Jailbreak Screen (so hot this year),he needs to stop bleeding after two whiffs by his colleagues
- +play speed, +FBI to Center’s Unger approach in the open field
- +agility - critics say its easy to dodge OL
- BUT he maintains +vision, +contact balance, +angle to ball carrier
Play 6: Comfortable in 3rd Tier Coverage
- DC confidence to show MANY coverages in RZ
- Remember Riley is a converted CB
- 2 plays: man & zone - smooth transition to WR breaks, fluid hips,
- solid agility at the 3rd tier to speed
- NOTE: Play 1 was not his blown assignment
Projection: Riley is a capable FS starter right now who displays good physicality and good play speed especially for a player of his experience. His frame may limit him as a tackler but his fundamentals are strong, do not think he is near his ceiling and looking to see further improvement on angles and really bigger hits as the season progresses. Ultimately, even if the Giants end up with a FA or flashier Safety pick in the draft he remains in the rotation.
