My raw notes from scouting the Panthers D. I edited some videos at the bottom, as well as putting my individual scout w/audio on Panthers CB Dontari Jackson:
Personnel:
DT Kawann Short6-3 315lbs
6th year out of Purdue
Mostly plays 3-tech(they like setting to the field), but can move down to 1-tech
Strengths
push pull move
good Use of Hands
good nose for ball,
Solid recognition
ok pad level
story is very written about here
6-3 340
big body, lot of stretched fabric
plays both 1 and 3-tech
had some big noise early in his career at KC, and at times with ATL
big thing for me was always effort/consistency
Guards of both ATL/CIN played well
dont be afraid to run at his side, MIZ, IZ, footwork is only solid
Strengths
penetration & power in both pass pro and run
vs OZ he is going south fast
again this is why teams like s-zone flowback to his side
solid to good UOH
but big thing is power
DT Kyle Love
6-1 310 been there for ever out of Miss State
subpackage and back up guy, can play 3 or 1-tech
Good get off
lot of power, good pad level, can blow off pullers at the POA
wont see consistently, but dont love the power vs. Greco, etc
not much to say, top 3 LB in the game, has to be top 2 MLB's in game
not the greatest pass rusher
pretty much the greatest at everything else
elite sideline to sideline speed
elite recognition /mental processing
very good in coverage, not as fast as Jaguars Telvin Smith but just as effective
very tough guy to climb to from OL perspective,
LB Shaq Thompson
6-0 230
1st rounder out of Washington
great FBI
very versatile SLB/OLB
sure tackler
big thing obvi is get him out covering down in space
although not doing much of that this year so far
best traits speed, mental process, recog, agility, AA, rangey, comfortable in space
worst slightly mediocre in coverage
doesnt have real ups or great consistent ball skills
beat on a corner route to the endzone
little slow to the break (had to know corner route coming)
Vs. The Run
What it Should Look Like
Play 1:
Play 2:
Play 3:
Weakness: Depth
When Short is not on the field, the interior line is a different group
Play 4:
Play 5:
Also… HEAVY dose of Play Action is needed (I like 12 and 13 personnel), not just for the “fake” but to slow the front 7 flow to the ball
Play 6:
