"You have to do what your best at," NFL Network analyst and Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner told NJ Advance Media before the season-opener. "Tom Brady and myself were very much built on seeing things, reading it, ball out of hand. Very accurate on the short passes.
"We could live in that underneath world and be successful. Eli has never been built that way. He has always been better at drop back, hitch a little bit, see it open, throw it down the field."
The following quotes discuss the scheme design.

I've noticed no one is talking about the scheme -the half-field and the low to high reads. Has no one noticed that or considered that as part of the equation? If that's indeed what they're playing, is it a true fit for what he does best?

All true but to be fair to the scheme design Shurmur made clear that he liked Lauletta over Webb because of his ability to anticipate and throw before receivers got open, not see open then throw. Eli's checked down before they open on deeper routes. Gotta anticipate OBJ being open!

Ok but if manning cant throw w/ anticipation against zones(he can &did vs hou), then u throw out the majority of combo routes... that means more iso routes(i.e. mcadoo offense )... which puts QBs placement as paramount, & wrs getting sep: 2 things that failed during mcadoos era

Shurmur subtly revealed a little about his true philosophy (about what he wants in a QB) when he cut gun-slinging backup quarterback Davis Webb in favor of the accurate safe-throwing Kyle Lauletta. Will he apply the same logic with Manning, who averages 16 interceptions per season?

“He was really good against Houston, but that’s what happens when you get old,” Baldinger said. “You have to string these weeks together. You have to start putting some good games together.

My take:
1. My mind is taking me back to the beginning of the recent off season. I strongly suspect that Gettleman's assessment of the situation was that it would take more than one season to revamp the Giants. I believe that John Mara bought into this assessment.
2. I have to wonder if Gettleman understood that when he hired Shurmur that he knew that Shurmur's offensive scheme was not a good match for Eli's strength. Regardless, I am confident that he knows it now.
3. There was so much confusion going on during the 2017 season, I doubt that Gettleman had a strong conviction on whether Eli is too old. The rest of this season will convince him one way or the other.
4. I seriously doubt that Gettleman is planning to retain Eli past 2019. If the rest of this season goes badly, I will be very surprised if Eli ends up not retiring or being released. Eli's CAP number for 2019 is 17mm. Combine that with the possible release of Vernon and the 2019 CAP savings would be 28mm. That is huge.
5. Given the above quotes, I will be paying particular attention to Eli's ability to anticipate receivers getting open as well as the progress made by the OL during the rest of the season.
