I can't decide. Last game for three quarters I drank happily egg nog spiked with fancy Rum. Well about 1/2 egg nog, 1/2 rum-- more of an half and half. Each time I put my glass down and turned my attention fully to the game I swear it sat there half full. There was always more to drink, more game to happily watch. Then the end of the game. The onside kick, the coin toss and the eventual win. After that I sat still in my chair with an egg nog mustache, I haven't shaved in weeks, so egg nog pretty much all over my face and I sat there for quite a while staring at the same glass sitting there which by then felt decidedly half empty. Which is it?
In the beginning of this year if you had told me we were on the way to a 8-8 season I would of been very upset. That would of been a glass half empty for sure. Now that you have biforcated the season into a last sliver and can say we are 3-1! The glass seems half full. Which is it? In the beginning of the year we had Eli Manning who looked so good in that one game last year that Gettleman watched and then we actually had the other Eli Manning who's so washed up all his own players know it. We saw our first Gettleman draft and secured the greatest running back in the draft as well as a big nasty offensive guard and a few others, we got rid of that dolt McAdoo, washed our hands of the past. Brought in some new players. Started afresh.
THEN- Half Full) The season Begins!
Shurmur emitted positive vibes on many aspects of the Giants, saying there are "a lot of very talented players on this team." As for new defensive coordinator James Bettcher, Shurmur called him "a rising star in this business."
THEN- Half Full)
Shurmur noted he and general manager Dave Gettleman are in agreement that winning teams are built in the trenches.
Shurmur said Gettleman told him, "'It starts with the offensive line.'"
"If you can't block and you can't pressure the QB, this game gets really, really hard," Shurmur said.
THEN)
When the year began the new coach Pat Shurmer spoke of not repeating last year's folly.
Shurmur acknowledges that there's a lot of work to be done with this team.
Shurmur says he learned a lot from his stint coaching the Browns.
"Everything in Cleveland, I wish I knew then what I know now," Shurmur says.
Shurmur also remarks on how much he admires Eli Manning.
"He's an outstanding football player. I can't wait to get to work with him."
Shurmur says he believes there are some good coaches already in the building that he will keep on the staff. Others he'll bring in from the outside.
"We'll make sure we can get a staff that can inspire our players," Shurmur says.
Shurmur said he watched Manning throw a little bit this past summer and thought he looked "really, really good."
"I think he's got years left," Shurmur said. "We've got a guy here that's helped his organization win Super Bowls. He's an outstanding player."
Shurmur called his new defensive coordinator James Bettcher a "rising star."
"He's a tremendous player," Shurmur says of Odell Beckham Jr.
"It makes sense to throw him the football," Shurmur said. "I think what needs to happen now is I need to get to know him."
Shurmur said Beckham was on the draft board when he was with the Eagles.
"I feel much more prepared to do this than the first time around," Shurmur says.
"I think with all things Odell, we just need to start talking."
Shurmur says they need to find out why certain things happened.
"We went through the process with Davis Webb," Shurmur said. "He's an outstanding player."
NOW- Half Empty)
Just 17 players carryover from the Giants' 2017 to 2018 rosters of Sep 6, Less Now!
However Coach took this view yesterday---
“We took over a 3-13 operation, we need to learn how to win again,’’ Shurmur said. Suddenly backward looking, it's strange especially with most of that roster gone. All new O line...etc.
A Look Back At A Turbulent Season-
The New York Giants were blown out at Met Life Stadium last night by a score of 34-13 against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Fans rained down boos at the team, Odell Beckham Jr. was throwing haymakers at inanimate objects on the sideline, and Eli Manning remained incompetent at the quarterback position. Despite the calls from many fans to bench the aging Manning, head coach Pat Shurmur says they are sticking with the veteran QB.
"We believe in Eli Manning," the first year head coach told media during his Friday press conference. "Listen, we're not talking about a quarterback change yet."
THEN- Half Full!) The New York Giants offense is going to have a much different—and hopefully more productive—look this fall.
Over the last four years, the Giants have averaged 411 rushes to 609 pass attempts.
When one looks at Manning’s prime years (2009-2012), a big difference was the balance in the offense.
One argument that could explain Manning’s “decline” seems to coincide with the uptick in the average pass attempts he’s been asked to throw each season
According to data gathered from Pro Football Focus, last year, Vikings quarterback Case Keenum attempted 1,346 passes, yet no one receiver, tight end or running back was targeted on more than 10% of the pass attempts.
By contrast, Manning, who in 2016 targeted Beckham on 25% of his pass attempts, limited his 571 pass attempts in 2017 to mostly three players: tight end Evan Engram (18.9%) and receivers Sterling Shepard.
NOW HALF FULL OR HALF EMPTY?... We've played with the glass so much I'm not sure!!!
“Feel good about this team and where we are,’’ Manning said. “Obviously took a little while to get going but feel like we’ve played better football this year than last year, for sure. The record’s obviously just a little better right now, still got some football to be played. We’ve been right there every game, been close to winning some games, had a couple of heartbreakers. We’re on the right track and doing some good stuff.’’
-->Manning said. “We made changes, new guys and new people. There’s quality people in this room right now.’’
-->“We took over a 3-13 operation, we need to learn how to win again,’’ Shurmur said.
I guess you can excuse this fan for not being sure. No win over Mark Sanchez is going to change things much except in draft position. That's the alarming thing about continually getting better here we slide back a good deal in the draft. Now this draft we all now is very poor for Quarterbacks. No QB may be taken in the Top 10 for the first time in a long time. In may ways Herbert could just fall into our laps. In order for that to happen though, we probably shouldn't win all these games left. There is one mathematical formula left that has us making the playoffs... it's not going to happen and when THAT door officially shuts we can access the QB situation a little more clearly and sanely. We can announce Eli Is Coming back! For a half season at least and still give Kyle a half or two here!
I imagine we will be leading by a good amount against the Redskins and rather than play that game as if it's a playoff game, I hope the team can see the way to get Kyle some reps in that game. Finish out the Fourth Quarter. Lets at least start with that.~stoney
