The Chicago front seven is very good. Eli will not have saquon or Sterling Sheperd but he will have a decent line for the first time in years.
This Friday, for the first time, we can start to form reasonable judgments for what has been, up to now an exercise in prejudices.
The answer always should have been " indeterminate, insufficient database".
Instead we've gotten the relentless din " Eli is done" - put forth in various abrasive forms with a Clairvoyant's certainty, with no room for doubt and damn close to religious fanaticism
The arguments were savagely flawed when presented.
" Eli is too old". False argument. He may be done and age may be a factor, but the universitialy of the argument is false. The nihilists haven't been bothered in the least by his peers, none of whom have declined. That simply doesn't count against The Need.
Rivers and Big Ben had super years, some of the best in their careers, Brady won a Superbowl and Drew Brees was very competitive. We are to believe that ONLY Eli is too Old among his peers and no consideration is given to the experience and smarts he's accumulated.
" he goes down too easily", "he's always checking down" the consequence of playing with a bad line. And I've never seen anything like 2 players picked up off the waiver wire and starting immediately without practicing 0n a unit dependent on cohesion. And startling enough, poor players with no experience and no practice provided an Improvement. But by all means blame Eli
Standing against the expertise of The Nihilists is the giant coaching staff
a group that has their jobs on the line, years of experience and an unlimited database of films.
When talkin about Daniel Jones one of the nihilist, (and maybe the brightest and most decent of the bunch) commentated that he had watched films of the man at Duke before the draft. He ignored the reams of praise garlanded on Daniel during the OTAs and first weeks of camp. Some writers said he was more advanced than Wentz and Lamar Jackson at comprable stages. Skeptic after skeptic including Phil and Chris Simms recanted their earlier thoughts. Most of his teammates gushed about what they were seeing.
But our Nihilist went with his film study. Note this was before the draft when no one knew we were taking the guy, still we're to believe that our nihilist spent the whole of his days and nights reviewing film. Spent 5 minutes on Jones and overruled the experts, Contradicted the coaching staff and scouting dept., disregarded his college coach and his relation to the Mannings and Giants. He stood tall and proud a knight Templar committed to a belief and I am not unmindful of the male flea floating down the river on his back, shouting "Open the Drawbridge!!".
One has to worry about his credentials as well as his use of time.
A smart decent Poster surrendering g to need and ego at the cost of logic and exemplifying the ill-logic and commitment to a cause.
None of this is to say, nor have I ever said, that Eli wasn't through. Just that he was entitled to be viewed in back of a decent line before judgments cascaded down.
Well it begins in a few days.
And if he plays well it will be interesting to see how the dedicated ones downplay it, or ignore it
