I'm a guy who can't help but seeing things in the superlative. Daniel Jones is the "most accurate" rookie Ive ever seen"..."OBJ was the best receiver I've ever seen". I can't help it and so it's a natural........" I don't think Ive ever seen anyone close on a fast runner the way Alonzo did last night."
it was a little like watching Zenyatta at the top of the stretch "my god, she's dead last, she'll never get there" And then the thing was she didn't go faster - ie. with regard to tempo, she just lengthened her stride ....and the impossible started to happen, the horses in front of her seemed to be going slower and here she comes, but it's still to late.........and somehow, she hooked the leaders and was by them ...."AND IT"S Zenyatta."
No way he was going to catch that guy,,, and then...well, he did and he had the presence to damn near knock the ball lose.
Extraordinary play.
Followed by another extraordinary play on specials.
Constantly talked up at camp as getting separation and gets behind receivers and his hands also talked up, he's also 6-4.
I took a little flack early on when I lauded the group of receivers Gettleman quietly assembled with only the investment of a no. 7 pick on Darius Slayton.
Well, it's better than I wrote and I used the superlative "astonishing".
These guys get open, they catch everything, they might not have the outrageous star power and brilliance of OBJ, but they fit Schurmur (and Eli's) philosophy of spreading the ball around and they're interchangeable. Corey goes down, Tate gets suspended, I don't think it matters. They pull for each other, they block with enthusiasm.
The stars long term might be the two we haven't seen: Alex Wessley (sp?) and Darius Slayton. Wessley is short but they say he's in and out of cuts seamlessly and will be superb soon. Darius reminds me (according to reports all my stuff is second hand and suspect) like the field stretching home run threat that Philly felt they needed when then reacquired Jackson.
Here's the worst part (or best part depending on your perspective) I've seen the prospective list of cuts: Cody Latimer (who I think does everything asked of him and is damn near to sensational), Reggie white Jr. and Alex Wessley.
Wow
Two Slightly Tangential Notes.
1. One of the most defining quotes ever : in damning his ex team "I only got 9 looks in our playoff lose to Green Bay" An indictment of the highest order. Worth looking at: he got 11 looks not 9, that's about 1/4 of the plays an average offense gets per game. A game he threw away with two interceptions and singlehandedly turn around when we had the league and Mother MO Momemtum. And the man complains that he didn't get enough looks.... Addition by subtraction?
2. Barkley is going to be split wide and a true quasi wide reciever'hybrid.. When you add him to the explosiveness of Evan E. this group of "ordinaries" and little bit more than "journeymen" becomes extraordinary and among the leagues best.
Conclusion...like so many things the din of Nihilists drowns out the incredible job Gettleman has been doing on various fronts.....
