Ok, Time is winding down. Next Saturday teams will need to submit their official 53-man rosters.
I believe that the powers that be have already made most of the decisions. The last preseason game will just serve to evaluate a final few players on "The bubble". I also feel that the Giants have pretty good depth this year with a lot of tough decisions at certain positions.
***I also want to point out that the 53-man roster submitted probably wont reflect the 53-man roster for the opening game against the Cowboys. Last year the Giants were #2 on the waiver wire and picked up like 6 players prior to the opening game, two players stuck, Spencer Pulley and Antonio Hamilton. This year the Giants are #6 in the waiver wire so I expect them again to sign at least one player prior to the opening game****

Here goes:
Quarterbacks: (3)
*Eli Manning, Daniel Jones, Kyle Lauletta
Thoughts – This might be a little bold. Two weeks ago I thought Lauletta was out and Tanney in with the notion that Tanney’s experience would benefit the scout squad and help develop Jones. However, I feel that Lauletta has done enough to prove he can play (better than Tanney). Jones is going to need a backup in the post Manning era so I believe Lauletta has more potential in front of him. I can also see the Giants going with 2 QB’s here and putting Lauletta on the PS if they need to free up space elsewhere.
Running Backs: (4)
*Saquon Barkley, Wayne Gallman, Paul Perkins, Eli Penny
Thoughts – This may be the weakest position on the team in terms of depth. Gallman isn’t really an adequate #2 and it only gets worse from there. Rod Smith and Perkins seem to have about the same value but Rod Smith just got hurt, I like Hillman but haven’t seen enough, I feel Perkins is a little more versatile. I just want to point out that this is one position that I think the Giants will be scouting the Waiver Wire, I wouldn’t be surprised if another teams worst is better than our #2 or #3. Eli Penny has a locker in the corner next to the long snapper
Tight Ends: (4)
*Evan Engram, *Rhett Ellison, C.J. Conrad, Garret Dickerson
Thoughts – Engram and Ellison are easy locks. Simonson, Conrad and Dickerson are a “pick 2”. This might be a little bold but I’m going with the two rookies. Conrad had hype early in camp but not much more lately. Dickerson seams to be an all around TE and has been the better STer. Simonson has two drops on 3 targets.
Wide Receivers: (6)
*Sterling Shepard, *Cody Latimer, Bennie Fowler, Darius Slayton, T.J. Jones, Alonzo Russell
Thoughts – This has to be the toughest decision group for the staff. It’s only going to get tougher when Tate returns. I think my bold prediction here is Russell Shepard as the odd man out and Alonzo Russell in. Russell Shepard costs $1M more than A. Russell, he’s a much better receiver but Alonzo Russell fits the bill of a special teamer like David Tyree. How often does your #6 receiver see the field as a WR anyway? Hustle Russell will at least be there on ST. Tough cuts for Britton Golden, Reggie White Jr and Alex Wesley.
Offensive Lineman: (8)
*Nate Solder, *Will Hernandez, *Jon Halapio, *Kevin Zeitler, *Mike Remmers, Chad Wheeler, Spencer Pulley, Nick Gates
Thoughts – The best OL groups we’ve seen in many years. My selections here rely on the ability of Pulley and Gates to play guard. This is a little risky with just 8 OL. My favorite depth player here is Nick Gates, total stud OL. He was a 3 year starter at OT at Nebraska. They have him at guard, he’s got a mean streak and he’s been the best back-up OT on the team. Chad Wheeler is hanging on by a thread with his one year experience.
*Big George Asafo-Adjei goes to the IR with a designation to return by week 8.
Defensive Lineman: (Just 6)
*Dexter Lawrence, *Dalvin Tomlinson, *B.J. Hill, Rj McIntosh, John Jenkins, Olson Pierre
Thoughts – I think they will move these guys around a lot. I was really close to cutting Olson Pierre here to make room for Darius Slayton. I’m not big on the Arizona alumni guys and Pierre has shown nothing. However Slayton is safe on the practice squad. John Jenkins has played well at the 1-Tech and deserves a spot IMO. McIntosh is the breakout player here, he has the most defensive pressures on the teams through 3 PS games.
Inside Linebackers: (5)
Alec Ogletree, Tae Davis, Ryan Connelly, B.J. Goodson, Josiah Tauaefa
Thoughts – This is probably the weakest unit on the entire team. Every player is incomplete. They either cant tackle or cant cover. I had to hold on to 5 players here in hopes that they can combine somehow and be efficient. Goodson has stepped up in preseason against backups, keeps his job. Connelly is the future here and will be a starter by the end of the year. Tae Davis is a Safety turned linebacker, you’d think he can cover but he’s horrible in coverage and just undersized as an LB. This group will struggle to cover TE’s this year and be our weakness on D. Also, not sure where they place Nate Stupar on this LB core but he’s lost his spot on special teams and the roster. He has 7 missed tackles on 10 attempts in pre-season, he held a spot on ST in the past but he’s lost it to Alonzo Russell here, he needs to go….
This is one position where I think we’ll look at the waiver wire……..
Outside Linebackers / Edge Rushers (4)
*Markus Golden,* Lorenzo Carter, Avery Moss, Oshane Ximines
Thoughts – There’s a bold prediction in here. You don’t see Kareem Martin. KM has been a failure here, I much would have rather kept Kerry Wynn. He’s part of the Betcher alumni and they can save about $2M if they cut him. We need pass rushers here not just guys that can hold the edge….. Moss is an edge rusher but I really think we look to the Waiver wire to improve that spot…..
Corner Backs: (5)
*Janoris Jenkins, *DeAndre Baker, *Grant Haley, Corey Ballentine, Sam Beal,
Thoughts – Jenkins and Baker will be the guys out wide. Haley has earned a spot in the slot. Ballentine can play anywhere. The big thing here is what to do with Sam Beal? Ronald Zamort is the next best option, he’s played well.
Safeties (5)
*Antoine Bethea, *Jabrill Peppers, Michael Thomas, Julian Love, Sean Chandler
Thoughts – These guys all make it. This group is weaker than you think. Weak coverage. Thomas and Chandler are good ST players….
Specialists (3)
Riley Dixon, Aldrick Rosas, Zak DeOssie
