I live out here in Indiana, where the only topic of conversation has been the retirement of Andrew Luck. So far, for the unspeakable crime of retiring while he still has a body to share with his wife and new child, Luck has been booed off the field, ripped by local pundits, and is the subject of videos in which his shirt is burned by irate fans. These same fans have also been demanding refunds on their season tickets. Refunds! How little they understand. I feel sorry for those who are so radically invested in a man they have never met on a team of players they don't personally know, that they should publicly make fools of themselves rather than show an ounce of empathy. Luck owes them nothing but gave them plenty, even when frustrated and in pain. Do they stop to think it may be possible that Luck was the victim of rotten genetics and didn't have the body type or composition to continuously take that kind of punishment. Eli may just be blessed with genetics that allow his body to endure the rigors of pro football better.
It's not like the NFL hasn't had its share of fragile players who deny that the writing is on the wall. Will Jordan Reed, for example, still be able to toss a ball around with his kid in ten years? Luck knows better. Why not just be thankful to him that the Colts avoided quarterback hell for six years after Manning departed. I'm a little ashamed for the fans out here. At least we keep out rough-and-tumble barbs on the board between ourselves. Really. Football loses a great star and competitor and people boo and burn jerseys. I just don't get it. True, I sent my OBJ jersey to Goodwill, but he deserves scorn from Giants fans. Luck, as far as I know, was not a hater on anyone or any team.
