Hello Again Giant fans. We approach the last pre season game and the team could not be more excited. So many new faces and undrafted types some even starting at linebacker. The total tear down of the NY Giants has resulted in a team worth betting on. In fact I know a few fans one in particular who all ran to the window to place Giant over 6 games bets. the 6 number seemed too low, or was it? These long time, life time Giant fans are apt to be quite satisfied with a 7 win season. After that they will trust the process. Just like NY Giant management.
That process will result in the Giants drafting Chase Young DE Ohio St next year and then Purdue's shifty receiver Rondale Moore the one after. Yes I know it's early to predict these things. After that we should be up and running with our new QB Mr Jones. This pre season has showed that Eli's working out with baseballs instead of footballs may be paying dividends. Yes he's still wearing that stupid glove on his left hand but he seems to be throwing the ball a tad bit faster. It is still alarming comparing Jones' velocity to Eli's, the kid has a much much stronger arm at this point.
The offense will go as far as the o line and the receivers will take them. My biggest fear this season is teams shutting down Barkley. We have got to keep the golden boy going for numerous reasons. One you really see the effort Saquon has put in to be a leader and to be vocal. All training camp he was trying to be the upbeat guy the talker, the guys that others should listen to. If we have another horrible year all of this glint of gold fades, the players realize Barkley's enthusiasm will only take them so far. Teams are sure to stack the line and so we must enter each game with a throw first mentality to work our way into a running game.
Keeping Barkley relevant is Item #1 on the year. Saying goodbye to Eli is Item #2. When will it happen? I have chosen the Vikings game to attend this season it's in early Oct. I'm probably on the early side- but that game could be Eli's last.
The 2016 connection. It seems hard to believe but back in 2016 we were already a bad team and coming off a very bad year. That was three or four years ago and we are still bad! The selection of Eli Apple truly was the downfall of everything, Reese, at that time McAdoo and our chagrined owner Mara. It was Mara who stood on his high horse and said no to a very promising offensive tackle with a small gas mask ganja problem. I think it was ganja maybe it was beer but the guy was in face mask a gas mask and it was retrofitted to deliver college fun and that's what kid's do.. it used to be funnels and then paper bags over the head until that became a fan's symbol of discontent. Now everyone Vapes. I'm talking of course about Laremy Tunsil of the Dolphins a player the Giants should rush to get. Why not! Give them a second round pick and their choice of our players. Will this get it done? If Miami's main goal is not paying up for a second contract for Tunsil it just might. This acquisition would really help and bolster what is looking to be a very average offensive line and maybe more importantly would re write history a little bit and allow Mara to regain his footing.
I find the 2016 draft so very interesting for todays Giants.-
2016 New York Giants draft
Round Pick Player Position College
1 10 Eli Apple CB Ohio State
2 40 Sterling Shepard WR Oklahoma
3 71 Darian Thompson S Boise State
4 109 B. J. Goodson LB Clemson
5 149 Paul Perkins RB UCLA
6 184 Jerell Adams TE South Carolina
In this draft Sterling Shepard was the big haul and this year we are asking Sterling to be a No 1 receiver. How this all works out will be huge for the Giants. Bj Goodson is sliding horribly and Paul Perkins may make the team after all as a backup. Adams and Thompson were busts and of course Eli apple was the Giant mistake the kept this franchise back. This is really where it all went horribly wrong.
Were we to wash out with Shep this year-- this entire draft would be in the garbage. Pretty much unheard of.
Getting Tunsil wouldn't set everything right but it would be a positive step in this rebuilding process, the owner would admit a mistake and we could again attempt to move forwards but alas without ODB.
Why did we trade Beckham? This will be the question we ask ourselves over and over this season-- what did we get a half decent offensive Guard? The rights to draft a promising DT? For that we let an all pro, possibly best in the game at a skill position go-- the guy that brought in all the dollars and eyeballs and who's name was on the back of 70% of the NY Giant fanbase. What of all those old jerseys? What of all of those old fans?
It's time to shift all our attention to Saquan- a running back. That will be oh so difficult with this offensive line I fear. Zeke's problems with Dallas right now is highlighting the same dilemma can a RB be your top weapon? I don't think so I would rank Quarterback and receiver over RB these days-- so we are really attempting to re write the rules here with a RB based attack. The sooner we get to Danielle Jones starting the sooner we can stop revealing our game plan of run, run run.
Truly a transitional year and I've seen some good stuff this pre season and of course some bad. Giant fans that are upbeat and they are a whole bunch of them on the West Coast (none on the East) But New Yorkers who have fled to California they are all still very enthused by the Giants and will argue your ear off. So I am holding back making any assumptions on this team, after all the 2016 team started out 2-0. We have a very easy schedule and no one is taking us seriously I think we could startle some people as long as our coaching holds up.
Here with the coaches I am most worried. Especially with Beltcher and the defense-- I need to see his vision-- he's got enough of his old players around lets see it! Lets get after people not hold back. The strength of our D may be our back end, the D backs as long as Peppers holds up. Here I have one of my biggest problems with the team and my biggest arguments with the West Coast Giant fans-- Peppers I'm not sure he's any fill in for Landon Collins. Supposedly he's better in coverage, he's certainly a lot worse against the run, seeing him burnt last pre season game long for a TD was uncomfortable and appears a preview for the year to come.
Anyway, this Patriot last pre season game should be tons of fun to watch. A whole half with our new QB at the helm. And the Patriots with enough back up talent to make it interesting. If Jones can throw 3 or 4 TD's the pressure fuse will be lit as we enter the season and Eli's days will be numbered.
Great to be thinking about football again! Today was my first day I stopped thinking about this crazy fast summer, my kitchen renovation delays and me not having a refrigerator as we enter September or a stove in place! Oh we had two months to do this! Why did I agree to an interior decorator! And why did he insist on buying a horse for show jumping in the Hamptons without looking into the horse's past? Oh he bucks like crazy! Breaking my Interior decorator's damn leg and ankle!~stoney
