There are few things certain in life I guess. One is that as soon as a Giant fan becomes content in losing and sits down to watch a game actually expecting to lose-- they win. I know there were a few special situations involved in this game; primarily the wind, but also KC not playing as great of late and personal matchups that generally worked with what we have. We were at home, we haven't won a game at home... but it was exciting never the less to see the guys play normal football.
Did you notice more than one person tackling the ball! That's really all it takes, this win really amplified even more the quitting on the field, the lack of hustling by everyone the past few weeks not just Jackrabbit. When everyone pursues the ball (and the opposing offense doesn't think to run any misdirection) people get on the ground. Cassias was asked after the game if he played to save McAdoo's job, he laughed-- "That was for my job man I'm playing for my job next year do you know what I mean?"
The next game-- That's for the coach. Washington. Angry. Their building. Thanksgiving night... WOW. If you have digestive problems as I do, you might want to keep the Pepcid AC ready for this game. Can we win? Well, several of the reasons we won this last game have to happen again. Mcadoo called of a fake punt. That was huge. That is something a good coach does with a good winning team and it's brilliant. However with a 1 win team it's more of who cares gesture-what do we have to lose? That attitude we need to keep. We need to continue playing desperate, aggressively going for it numerous times on 4th down, perhaps calling another fake punt as a coach just let it all go.
“I thought [offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan] called an aggressive game in overtime,’’ Manning said. “Second-and-7, we checked to a run right there and got the first [down] and then hit a couple of nice plays to Roger Lewis and Tavarres King and then obviously Roger with the big play on fourth down down the left sideline. I thought the guys stepped up, were excited about the opportunity and we wanted to go get the win. We could smell it, we could taste it. It was there for us and we went and got it.’’
What else has to happen to beat Washington? Eli REALLY tried to be vocal this week and this game. I appreciate that and when i heard the after game speech by Eli... I realized why he shies away from these things... It was weird, it trailed off... it said something about Thanksgiving... I took it as beat the Redskins and we'll rest well at Thanksgiving.. but it didn't exactly come out that way.
“Just that we’ve got to do a better job keeping the energy up,’’ Manning said after a 12-9 upset victory in overtime at MetLife Stadium. “It’s easy to start before the game but before the second half, third quarter, celebrate the stops, get the offense going, communicate a little bit more and just keep the excitement going and take that the whole game.’’
It just boggles the mind why these thoughts didn't occur to anyone at 1-4.
Our Coach was running around the sidelines not standing impassively, he was talking to guys, slapping rear ends. His fake punt went to his personal favorite Nat Behr --- and the coach talked about his ability to pump guys up and address them during the game now that he is freed from holding the large clipboard.
All of these moves born of PURE desperation need to continue- they have to align again in a few days if we are going to beat Kirk Cousins and the Redskins. Our coach needs to be open to trick plays; Eli needs to be vocal; 4th down is a down to consider going for it anytime you cross the 50 yard line... in short we must do everything we can to ebb a few more points out of this offense. Think about it, we won a game we scored 12 points. That's not going to translate well to Washington. We need to be as forward minded as we were in this last game that was a throw away game-- we cannot tighten up and play traditional football with the Redskins. Tackle with passion. Maintain the Contain on D, keep everything in front. The wind in the last game allowed us to crimp our linebackers right along the line of scrimmage greatly controlling the Chief's ground game, can we do that again against Cousins who's having a good year? I think we can but we need to add a DB and play with 2 linebackers...Spags will need to come up with a trick. We shouldn't forget in this past game there was a bad Spags moment. He blitzed from the off side and amazingly had Olivier Vernon on Travis Kelcie and they got a huge late play 30 + yards. It could of been the one play that lost the game and it would of been Spag's fault and perhaps his exit card.
This past game the players had finally looked themselves in the mirror. For some reason all season Mcadoo had not been showing the bad tape to the entire team. Broken down in their small rooms each unit might of seen a bad play or two but it was all swept under the rug. Finally the whole team had a film review and the result on the field was very evident. Why had this not been done earlier? A young coach who has already been accused of throwing his players under the bus.. he didn't have the man spirit to do it. It's unfortunate, these team wide film session happened every week under Parcells and I assume Coughlin.
Now we have won a game so there will be NO bad film review. Just props and good urges... does that work with this team??? We'll find out Thursday night, as the Giants having won one for themselves, now take on the Redskins and this time will try to win one for their coach! ~stoney
