I have a feeling that the Giants secondary which currently has the 2nd lowest coverage rating in the NFL will start to see some changes... I think the secondary we will see in the second half of the season could have an ENTIRELY different look:
(Sorry for the long post)
- Julian Love who was a healthy scratch the first few games and has only seen practice reps with the scout team has started to get real practice reps on defense this week. He hasn't played a single defensive snap yet this season. Antionne Bethea (who Betcher loves) has played every single snap on defense and has performed very poorly in coverage. His passer rating against is a perfect 158.3 I'm sure every coaching staff we play against will try to exploit this liability. It's up to our coaching staff to mitigate the liability. I've also noticed the Giants play as many as 4 safeties on 3rd downs while our ILB's have been riddled with injuries. I expect to finally see some Love on Thursday!
- Janoris Jenkins who has been the epitome of hot and cold this season will test Gettleman's decision making and negotiating skills as the NFL trade deadline approaches in just 3 weeks from today. Jenkins is perfect trade bait for a contending team in desperate need of a CB down the stretch and 24 teams currently have the cap space to afford him. Jenkins will be the 2nd highest cap hit on the team next year, trading him will free up $11.25M in cap space and cost $3.5M in dead cap. Trading Jenkins would be a big time rebuilding move both in terms of cap relief and throwing one of the rookie corners directly into the fire for the rest of the season. I'm curious to see if Gettleman has the balls to do it. Personally I hope he does even if it results in a potential extra loss or two this year.
- We're probably all wondering how Sam Beal is doing. Word is he's fully recovered and runs sprints on the sideline in practice. Next week he will be allowed to come off of IR and fully return to practice. Week 8 against the Cowboys he will be allowed to play. “I feel bad for the first offensive player I face,” Beal, 23, said with a smile in the locker room Tuesday. “I’m gonna let that cork loose. You ever see a champagne bottle, how the cork pops off? That’ll be me. You’ll see the hit and go, ‘oh he wasn’t lying.’ It’s hard to keep that aggression and energy you need for football from oozing out. I can’t wait.” Big words for a 175 lb kid who's only practiced about a dozen times in two years. Hopefully some time to reflect will motivate him to come back strong and get his career on track.
- Deandre Baker has been a disapointment to say the least. His passer rating against is a near perfect 156.3. Let's be patient, 5 games is way too early to be calling him a bust but some kind of adjustment should be made. I think that horrible unsportsmanlike penalty he took was the que to give Corey Ballentine a shot on the outside. There's not a single Giants fan that doesn't love Ballentine. I think this kid is going to turn out to be a 6th round steal of a pick. He was exceptional in camp and pre season, yet has only played 2 snaps in coverage this year?. I think we're all ready to see what he can do.
- Grant Haley has struggled as much as the rest of the DB's. He's been getting picked apart in coverage to the tune of 83% completion pct. I actually like Haley, I think he has potential as a full time nickel corner just not this Thursday against Jullian Edleman. This is probably the scariest matchup we'll see against the Patriots. Maybe its an opportunity to move Deandre Baker into the slot or give Jullian Love or Corey Bellentine a shot. They cant do much worse than 83% completion% against.
To sum it up, I think things are going to start to look very different back there. Jenkins might be gone, Baker, Bethea and Haley should see some time on the bench and we should finally see a glimpse of Love, Beal and Ballentine. All within the next month or so. These young guys are the future of the secondary. A lot will come down to how willing the coaching staff and Gettleman are to treat this as a rebuilding team. I think Gettleman will be smart enough to trade Jenkins if a good offer is there. However, Shurmer and moreso Betcher are in a bit of the hotseat to win games now. Are they too stubborn to make long term moves and play some of the younger players now at the risk of losing games this season as they gain experience?
