Follow along as we look at our mistakes. Click each link to be brought to Youtube for the specific play (The NFL doesn't allow video embedding of their videos)
Time stamp: 0:38 - I had to watch this play multiple times because of the camera angle. This is a tough throw. Very small window. Look at the linebacker covering Rhett Ellison (#85). He's sitting directly parallel with Golden Tate's route. Daniel Jones has to throw it high or the linebacker can just jump and intercept it. Jones put the ball a tad bit inside. Furthermore, if Jones throws it to Golden Tate's outside too far you can see the safety in position for an interception. The ball needs to have perfect placement like throwing a dart into a bullseye. Incredibly small window. Very risky route.
Time stamp: 1:12 - Really stupid play by Marcus Golden. I'm shocked the refs called a penalty on this but look closely at #44 coming into the play and shoving the patriots defender who is already laying on the ground, back to the ground. 15 yard penalty for that nonsense. After an amazing interception that put you in field goal territory, you do that and now you are at the 50 yard line. No points scored on this drive because of that penalty.
Time stamp: 1:42 - Someone explain to me how this is not a fumble? Edelman catches the ball, takes two steps, a football move, continues to hold onto the ball. As he's being pushed backwards, he is stripped. Giants recover the fumble.... but wait. The refs decided that wasn't a fumble.
Time stamp: 2:05 - Execution, execution, execution. #70 (Kevin Zeitler) has one job on this play. Block #58. He whiffs on the block. Mike Remmers has one job. Sell the screen and block his man. If both guys do their assignment the Giants most likely get a first down. All the Patriots secondary players are drawn away from the play. The entire right side of the field is open. Failed execution leads to the next debacle of a play below....
Time stamp: 2:13 - Can't happen in any scenario. This is how they put up their first points on the board. It doesn't get any easier than that. Bad special teams play.
Time stamp: 2:52 - This just can't happen. Daniel just needs to accept there is nothing there and throw it out of bounds. He held a tick too long. The defender hit his arm on the throw.
Time stamp: 4:50 - Peppers has to make this tackle. Over runs the man. Needs to decelerate by chopping his feet, target the man's waist, and make a solid tackle. Instead he doesn't decelerate, lunges his arm out, really bad technique! First down. Drive continues! Patriots score on this drive right before half time.
Time stamp: 6:07 - This is the one truly bad play by Daniel Jones. I don't know what he saw on this play. The CB switched men, the defender was sitting on Ellison's outside. Daniel Jones throws it to Ellison's outside. There was simply no play there. He should have saw that guy, and proceeded through his progression (the RB sitting in front of him for an easy 3-4 yard gain). He made a nice drive down the field until he made that bad decision. Jones is a high IQ football player. I'd assume his excuse would be that he didn't see the CB switch men and didn't see a defender there. That's the only explanation because there's no way he's throwing it where he did.
Time stamp: 7:21 - I talked about WR body positioning in another thread. Its something that the elite WRs in the league do. Slayton gets excellent body positioning on this play. What's the problem? He had an extra yard of cushion past the first down marker. He "boxed out" the defender. All he has to do is come back to the ball. What does he do instead? He "boxes out" the defender and stays still, waiting for the ball to come to him. That allows the defender to get his hands into his body to breakup the pass. He had the leverage to catch the ball, easily. He needs to box out his man (think Basketball) then lunge towards the ball for an easy catch. He executed half of what you want to see. Excellent pass by Daniel Jones. He did everything he had to do. Slayton needs to execute. The defender is irrelevant if you the WR executes this properly.
Time stamp: 8:02 - You simply cannot fumble this ball. We are in this game. Honestly, we should be winning it. Too many silly mistakes. This should have been 4th down and a punt. Instead its a silly fumble and returned for a touchdown. Game over.
