A week into the trade and before Williams has played his first game, I'm not sure it's fair to call this a retrospective. But after the rush to judgment immediately after the trade, I've had time and modified some of my thoughts.
First THE CONS:
1. Giving up up a 3 in 2020 and most likely a 4 in 2021 for a player you might have gotten for free come the end of the year. I didn't like it, and I still don't, but I think I understand it. We've been spoiled because Gettleman has been doing very well with his threes. But you only have to look at Reese's history to find some ten years of fruitless barreness, and I for one think D.R's luck was about to change - and don't kid yourself luck plays a role, no one is as bad as Reese appears and no one can be as good as gettleman appears - at least as of this writing.
But most importantly, and the changer in all this, is that no three pick can reasonably expect to significantly impact in the year that he is picked - and maybe not even "unreasonably' so -it just doesn't happen. Fact is, the minute we started Jones the day of judgement for Gettleman and staff (and maybe us too)was moved to 2020. Williams can play a transformative part next year, and even the eight games he gets this year can make that impact more significant and more defining...and not just as regards him, but teamwise in the broadest sense.
#2. This bothers me, you going to hear me list all the positives I think Williams could do for the defense, but why then did the Jets let him go? They are in an almost eerily similar situation, and while Lawrence still might not be at the level of Quincy Williams they play the same position and frankly, the popular opinion notwithstanding, I think our guy is a disruptor who I anticipate will be made better by The Williams acquisition.
So why aren't they holding on to him? That thought rides ghost-like like on all of the positisms that it took a week to develop.
PRO'S:
8 new starters and dead weight with Haley and Gettleman miscalculation at Free Safety I'm making this very new defense look worse than they are. I think, nevertheless, that there's genuine Talent there and I think Williams is the perfect man to bring it out. And here's my best scene scenario: we can have a very good defense next year without spending additional resources and that frees us to finally fix the offensive line.
Hear me out _ before Callie gets a chance to burst my bubble.
Tomlinson has been playing very well, D Lawrence can be a beast, Williams has length and even if he doesn't achieve his great potential we stole a superb ball player at a position of need. Who, by the way, has not missed a game in his five-year career.
Everyone sees Lawrence going to the zero technique, I think he could be lethal playing the five technique against tackles who have been gearing up and evolving to fight off quick Edge rushes. This acquisition makes that possible, if not inevitable. Whoopi
If we stay in the 3/4, and I think this Personnel gives us the option of going back to the 4/3, I think all three starters could occupy Double teams.
Bingo, even if hyperbole is wearing the blue cape, I think the linebackers are immediately better. And, all of the crocodile tears notwithstanding this is not an untalented a bunch as so much of the board here endlessly laments. Nd laments, and.......
Connelly and mayo are hard-headed, harder nosed and capable in the middle (though I like both of them better as an MLB) ; Carter in his third year; Markus golden in his second year free from injury; Ximines in the year of greatest growth. Not bad.
We're likely adding 3 not one significant piece this week that's esp. relevant. Ballantyne and Beal come back and I'm hoping there's our answer. We will re-sign Janoris next year, count on it. He's also key.
So I've got Janoris, Baker, pepper, Ballantyne and Sam Beal to fashion a defensive secondary out of. My sense of it is that Julian Love is not going to be a factor, but that he and Haley might be capable backups. And my sense, which is often wrong and leaves me looking foolish, also feels strongly about Ballantine and Beal.
In my dream, Ballantine becomes the tall rangy free safety who energizes and frees Peppers, Janoris goes to the slot, and Sam Beal and Martin become my corners.
And now suddenly the eight game rentalmakes sense. Ballantyne and Sam Beal along with Williams gives us half the season to acclimate and make judgments that might carry one of the youngest teams in the league into the next decade.
If I'm even half right the three units that make up a defensive team should each be very strong. And if that happens, and if Darius Slayton continues his path, then all our resources in the draft can go to the offensive line, with this caveat, we have Slade, Gates, and big George and might find a player among that three.
The eight games together will also show any holes in the grizz's optimist theory.
And that's what we have some 90 million in free agent money for.
So that's where I'm at. Happy, excited, optimistic with the end of some dreary years in sight. And by the way, with a quarterback who I think is going to be sensational.
And then, my Conundrum Taps me on the shoulder,"Griz, my optimistic foolish friend," it says," If Williams is the linchpin that makes this happen, for god sakes tell me why the Jets let him go for problematical 3rd rounder who shouldn't count for much next year?".
Note, this is before Cali and the usual band of suspects have their shot at me. But I meet Mister Conundrum face on," Well, we'll just have to see won't we?
. ..after all That's what makes this sport so compelling and keeps me coming back - in spite of my best intentions?".
Sorry dictating gets exponentially harder the longer the post goes.
