I'll start by once again stating that Pat Shurmur should be fired, but whether he is or isn't the Giants need to rebuild/replace many inept coaches who are currently on the staff. I think the biggest needs are new Defensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach. The Giants also need a HC who isn't moonlighting as the Offensive Coordinator, enough of that, so in the tragic event that Shurmur stays he should be forced to turn the offense over to an OC, additionally the Giants must hire a Quarterback coach, are they actually using Tanney unofficially in that capacity? The best way to replenish a staff is to hire good coaches caught up in a regime changes. So lets take a look at some potential targets on teams that are likely to fired their Head Coaches.
Atlanta:
First of all I'd love Dan Quinn to be the DC, in addition to that Dirk Koetter is a highly thought of OC, I'd consider him in that role here.
Redskins:
Bill Callahan won't be retained, he's one of the best OL coaches in the NFL, yes hire him in that capacity here! Kevin O'Connell is considered a very bright young mind and might even get some HC considerations, prior to being named OC he was a QB coach, I'd be interested in him.
Browns:
Todd Monken was a finalist for a couple of HC jobs, he's the current OC, I'd be very interested in him and their DC Steve Wilks who did a great job in that capacity at Carolina. I have no interest in Freddie Kitchens.
Jaguars:
Marrone is fighting for his life, I'm not interested in him even as an OC, but I'd be very interested in OC John DeFillipo.
Jets:
Yes the Jets, no way in hell on Gase, $@#! or not I'd be interested in Greg Williams for DC, I always liked Jim Bob Cooter, maybe he'd be a good addition somewhere on the staff. The Jets best coach is probably their ST Coordinator Brant Boyer, however this is the one coaching position I think the Giants got right.
Denver:
Hell yes on Vic Fangio as DC, Mike Munchak is their OL he'd be a huge improvement over Hal Hunter
Cowboys:
In spite of last night, this seems to be the year where Garrett needs to not only make the playoffs but go deep there. Conjecture suggests Kellen Moore is their boy wonder heir apparent, personally I'd like to see the Giants consider him to replace Shurmur. Kris Richard is likely going to get an HC job but for some reason he finds himself without a chair I'd love to hire him as the DC.
The bottom line is there will be some really good Coordinator and position coaches available, Shurmur had an obligation to improve his staff after last season but blew that task off. I want a new HC but at the very least he damn well better improve his staff.
