Considering the serious noise that was made when he was picked (and I understand why), overall Jones has shown some real upside.
Here is the stat line thus far. in 9 games 8 started he has completed 187 of 297 pass attempts for a completion % of 63. Passed for 1984 yards, with 15 td's vs 8 int's and 13 fumbles 8 lost (totals 15 td vs 16 turnovers). The kid has been sacked 32 times and overall his QB rating is 88.
Overall, his rookie season has been very solid and he has the look of a solid franchise QB. he has some nice touch on his passes, I like the way he puts the ball into tight spots in his WR hands, his long ball has been solid but better than advertised on draft day and the kid is tough, shows grit and can take a hit. I also like the fact that he can run the ball when he needs to for first down, extending drives. DJ, like Eli, seems to be able to shake things off and go back to business.
The sacks are a serious problem and though some are rookie situations and learning to get rid of the ball a little quicker, the main issue is the pitiful offensive line. DJ is on pace to be sacked 52 times!!! Tough or not, he can't continue to take that kind of beating.
Onto the one major issue we all have concern over, his fumbles. The only real downside thus far in his rookie campaign for me is the fumbling issue. He has to learn to hang onto the ball, granted some are backside hits from a porous offensive line but he needs to better learn the rush and get a better feel for the pressure. I hope over time this will happen. Some of this also has to come from coaching, which we all know has been pretty bad.
Just based on averages, DJ should finish the year with around 3200 yards passing and 25 TD's with an awful line, WR's who have been hurt or missed games and a pretty lackluster running game with Barkley being out and returning not completely healthy.
I really have been pleased with what DJ has shown (fumbling aside) in his rookie season and with better protection and a healthy Barkley and WR's, I really think the kid has something and can be a 10-12 year guy, injuries aside. As much as I am not A Gettleman guy, he seems to have made a decent pick in this kid.
