Blame The Youth. That seems to be the message. It has come in drips and drabs but one Giant source after another has been pointing to the team's youth as a reason we are where we are. They say this with a twinge of optimism that is unfounded. First off it's not the youth -- it's the player there are many, many fabulously talented young players in the NFL just not on the Giants. As well when this season started the Giants were 18th in the league in average age. Teams such as the Packers & Vikings were younger!
It its all semantics of course (everyone is around 25-26) and the Giants want you to realize we have proportionately the most young players playing. Take that-! Again this is presented as a good thing. However as these other teams show -- you don't have to do that if you select your free agents wisely. And sign a few people to second contracts.
The Patriots are the oldest team. I guess there is something to be said for pure age. If you took the 19 oldest Patriots and shaved 5 years off each of their ages, their roster still wouldn't be as young as the Dolphins' roster. That being said if I asked you point blank who had the better younger players The Pats or The Giants what would you say?
Draft picks are by their nature young so if the Giants are the youngest now or playing the most young players is this a good thing or a bad thing? Well when you're " young " like our All Pro kicker Rosas who is so bad this year you are trying out kickers in the off week-- I'd say it's a bad thing. The veterans that have been brought to the Giants clearly are the WRONG veterans OR the Draft Picks selected by the Giants are the WRONG draft picks-- can't have it both ways. Something stinks in Denmark and it's not the cheese.
"The young guys don't know what it takes to be a championship level team," "What it takes every day. And if they think it is hard now, what do they think it will be like when we're trying to get to the Finals?" That was Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving speaking for all the adults in all sports.(after a close loss to the Magic)
Youth is a valuable asset in the NFL, especially with the rookie wage scale in place. If a young man is producing at a high level during his initial contract, his organization will benefit from the below-market deal and can then invest in other areas of the roster before working on a second contract... Well that's the idea.
A youthful roster is no longer synonymous with a rebuilding one. But that's the point! Rookies are now expected to step into starting roles more and more each year so the core veterans can consume the lion’s share of the salary cap.<-- Which for the Giants includes all these contracts for players not here.
So the Giants have found themselves in an interesting position. They would like to create core veterans but those core players are among the youngest Barkley, Jones, etc. They seem to be trying to shortchange the process to provide new faces but maybe not the correct new faces and to hide behind others older (Solider)
“They have trouble making decisions. They would rather hike in the Himalayas than climb a corporate ladder. They have few heroes, no anthems, no style to call their own. They crave entertainment, but their attention span is as short as one zap of a TV dial.”
-Time Magazine speaking of Millennials -2001
“Millennials have been called the most cautious generation – the first to grow up with car seats and bike helmets, the first not allowed to walk to school or go to the playground alone.”
“The emergence of the millennial generation poses an existential threat to the future of the National Football League… Concerned about the safety of their ‘special’ children, the parents of many millennials have demonstrated a strikingly fearful reaction to a series of reports about the devastating impact playing in the NFL has had on many former players.”
Millennial generation could kill the NFL, - The Christian Science Monitor, 2012
On defense, for the Giants there are five first- or second-year players in key roles: Baker, Dexter Lawrence, Lorenzo Carter, Corey Ballentine and Oshane Ximines. -- So Either these are the wrong players or we have the wrong other older players. Something is wrong. THE DEFENSE IS THE WORST IN THE LEAGUE! Tying all of this young & old talent together is perhaps the wrong coach.
Shurmur is in no way pleading for his job, but he is convinced this losing is for a greater good.
“I really believe we’re on the right path,’’ he said. “We don’t have the wins to quantify that, but I believe in my heart of hearts we are on the right path and it will come.’’

MUTANY-?
Will the Giants return from their bye week and fold completely to the Bears? It's happened before to the Giants around Thanksgiving. Will everyone tackle like jackrabbit, will the offense score no points at all. Are we due a drubbing; a 34-0 sort of game. Is that what it's going to take to ring John Mara's bell on his desk. The one he hits when he wants Gettelman to come into the room. ~stoney
