CB has got to be one of the toughest positions to translate from CFB to the NFL. I'm not ready to call him a bust, but he could very well become a bust in this system.
The biggest problem with Baker is that he is a very particular style of CB. And that skill set is the opposite of what the Giants are running.
At Georgia he played Man / Press coverage where his only real responsibility was to stop a single player on the other team, the other teams best receiver. He could line right up against them, jam them off the line and not worry about anything else. He did it very well. Anything else he does is a plus, like tackling in the run game which he was also very good at.
The Giants coverage scheme is the farthest thing from how Baker played in college. The Giants currently play the softest zone coverage that I've ever seen. I see mostly a Cover-2 defense with a Nickel CB in place of a DL playing in man coverage on a slot WR. Often Peppers moves into the box to help against the run and it becomes more of a Cover - 1 (1 high safety). They basically play the CB's far off the LOS, try to prevent the 10+ yd passes but allow the short passes and worse off get picked apart in the gaps between the zones. The Giants are notoriously bad at covering 10 to 15 yards out in the middle of the field.
Here the Giants have 3 SAFTIES ON THE FIELD... And they cant cover a pass 20 yards out between the hash marks??? That's literally where Safeties reside.
This is NOT Baker's fault in this coverage scheme. He's still responsible for a shorter play on his side of the field.
If Baker played him man to man there's a good chance he makes a play or at least prevents a TD
With 6 DB's (2-3-6) we cant prevent a 20yd pass right in the middle of the field???
Here's a play that Baker criticized for.
1. Baker is lined up 8 yds off the LOS and atleast 35 feet away from the receiver. As the only DB on that side of the field, he's responsible for a lot of real estate behind him.
2. With this coverage the play is almost indefensable. The Slant obviously worked but an OUT route, or Hitch would have been an easy 5 yds s well. (SOFT zone)
3. The receiver runs right through Pepper's, Buccanon's AND Ogletree's Zone's uncovered
4. In terms of coverage, in this scheme, Baker is no longer responsible for covering the receiver crossing to that side of the field. He still has responsibilities behind him if the play were to go that way.
5. Yes, you can fault Baker for lack of hustle after the catch,... but not before.
Here he is playing 10+ yds off the LOS in zone coverage, good luck against Amari Cooper.
Here's a whole slew of highlights. Notice how far back he's playing. He's going to get endorsement deals with Charmin.
Except:
Note the play at 1:32 lined up 1 yard off the LOS. Perfect Coverage! almost identical to the play he got a PI call last Sunday. Velcro.
Now here is how Baker covered at Georgia:
Skip past his great tackling and Int highlights, we're only concerned about coverage here.
1:40 - Here he is against Joe Burrow and LSU. Notice he's 1 yd off the LOS in the red zone. Perfect Coverage
2:01 - Here he is against our own Darius Slayton, again 1 yd of the LOS in Man coverage against a fast WR with a lot of field behind him. Perfect Coverage
2:07 - Again 1 yd off the LOS perfect coverage
I think Baker will get better but he will always get lost in this soft ass BS Betcher zone coverage. He's at his best when his only worry is the WR lined up in front of him. When you add other responsibilities he may struggle.
Baker will have a high ceiling but it will be based on his supporting cast including the DC. If the Giants had a good Free Safety and a pass rush Baker wouldn't have to play so soft in this coverage.
