The Giants are a bad team, they've had three atrocious years in a row now. They've had a lot of injuries, and they have a lot of young players on the roster this year. To me, the offense is not what is killing this team, it is the defense. I believe in Daniel Jones. I believe he's the next franchise QB and I think that if they improve the offensive line that the offense next year, with Jones in his second season, can become one of the best in the NFL. I really believe that. Give Jones a running game and protection, they already have a lot of good receivers, and Barkley can be exceptional if healthy and given holes to run through. This offense can be well balanced and score a lot of points consistently. The defense is the biggest problem. There is very little talent. Outside of Golden, Tomlinson, Lawrence, maybe Ximines, maybe Carter, and some young corners which haven't played real well yet but have shown some improvement, there is a lot to be desired here. To me, the defense has struggled more because of communication and mental errors and less because of the talent. I place a LOT of blame on Bettcher. Shurmur is not a defensive coach, he handles the offense. And I know the head coach is supposed to do both, but let's be honest that Shurmur is here because of his work with quarterbacks and offense, not because of defense. Bettcher has failed badly. If they replace him with a more competent defensive coordinator, I think this young and improving defensive roster will play better next year. Not great, but maybe average? That's a big step up over atrocious. If the Giants offense can be great, I'll take an average defense. To me, that would result in a winning team.
My point behind all of this is that I don't blame Shurmur for the defense being so bad. And with the flip-flopping of quarterbacks, the horrible offensive line play, Barkley's injury, and the receivers constantly in and out of the lineup due to injuries, there's been no consistency on offense which you would expect. And all of this with a rookie QB. The only thing I can see blaming Shurmur for and saying that it should cost him his job is the couple of games this year where the team did not appear ready to play football. Detroit, Arizona come to mind. But...if we're being totally honest.....doesn't that happen pretty much every year to every team? There's no team, except maybe Patriots, that comes out and plays great for 60 minutes every single game all season long. There's always a few crap games that you just throw out and say "let's get 'em next week!"
I am not trying to say that Shurmur should be brought back, I am fine if they decide to fire him, but I do believe that its not unreasonable if they stick with him for another year. I will not be jumping up and down with anger if they do. And what I am asking is for those that do want him fired in the worst way to tell me why. And don't tell me about their record or how much he's lost, because I already know all that. I want to know what exactly about him you don't like.
